The upteenth pilgrimage back to NYC was made possible by a
handful of dears. Manny, who posted a rideshare offering on
craigslist and slept through 4 states as I drove round the clock.
He'd awaken delirious every couple hours and say,
"I'd take a bullet for you". His way of showing
appreciation for a road trip companion.
I got off near Raleigh to visit my dad's half sister
and Mel Norton, but neither of them were accessible that weekend.
Overnight in N. Carolina's 'Triangle' I came across a brand new
cardboard dumpster, literally in mint condition, 47% full with
clean, corrugated chunks. Dumpsters have never ever been on my
improvized shelter list, their awful stench and slimy stains.
But this one was like a fresh metal tent. Not pup or dome, but box.

Next morning Mark Chriscoe was at the carwash, just after I'd thrown
on my pack. I asked him for walking directions to the interstate and
he offered me a ride. Ended up being the nicest human being on earth
and took me all the way to Charlotte. There I met up with dear Margie.
She gave me a bicycle tour of the city and we even gave some lovely
old hobo a haircutt at some random McDonalds parking lot. However,
I'd have to disagree with those who say it's the NYC of the south.
It does have an incredible 'greenway' that runs along the creek bed
though. What a way to equate bicycling to meditation.

Later that same day I left for Asheville. My freshly painted 'I-26'
sign caught these pool refurbishers who had me climb into their
pickup bed so loaded with draining equipment that there nearly
wasn't room for me. Miraculously I made it to Crystal's cozy bed by
midnight. Helped Melody set up a fancy myspace profile and shot the
shit with Wednesday while we ran errands, like coffee and thrift store
shopping, for a day.

A nice man who inspects dentist offices for radiation abnormalities
gave me a long ride all the way from the Tennessee border to just
outside Washington DC. I Metroed it into Chinatown and bussed it
economically up to NYC in one shot. First order of business was
to collect three weeks worth of pay that the moving company owed me.
Then file for a NY state driver license at the DMV, one of the many
steps taken towards becoming a cabdriver. Autumn in New York means
I get to wear my favorite article of clothing, the postapocalyptic
sweater. It's been a little over a week now being back in town.
Done a six hour defensive driving course and a few little
adventures while waiting for my new NYS ID to arrive in the
mail: Free Hip Hop Karaoke night at the Knitting Factory.
A hands-on exhibit by Doctors Without Borders at Prospect Park.
A romantic birthday party high up on a rooftop for Luka.
Another splendid one-on-one bicycle tour of NYC, this time
for a friend of a friend, someone visiting from Germany.
The next update should have some actual TAXICAB material,
provided the beaurocratic delay desists.
