rest in peace, Sweet Pea

Forgive me if he was a Detective, I don't know. I don't know if I am addressing him properly, and I mean no disrespect. but I just saw him on Anderson Cooper; apparently he was involved in an unnecessary restraint incident during the post levee failure days. The trial was today, and the other officers were found "not guilty". Lance Schilling did not stand trial, because, as I just found out from watching on the news, Lance Schilling killed himself this June.

In 2002, when my friend Michael was staying with me and was mugged, officer Schilling came to my apartment to take the report. He was terribly handsome and kind, so much so that michael and I were joking about the "hott cop". About a month later, Officer Schilling was dispatched to my apartment to take the report when someone broke in. he joked with me that I was just trying to lure him back to my apartment; he calmed me and was the nicest police officer I have ever dealt with. When I went to the police station to put together a sketch, I saw on his desk that the officers had given him a nickname "Sweet Pea" - I used to call him "hott cop sweet pea".
I had no idea that he was involved in that incident. In the videotape, you can clearly see that Officer Schilling was trying to stop his fellow officers and he was trying to calm the arrestee - that was how he worked. You could see the dismay in his eyes in the videotape.
I don't know what I believe in, but right now I am praying that Sweet Pea is resting in peace. i can't begin to imagine the horrors he endured post levee failure; I was one of the lucky ones who owned a car and got out of town and returned after people like Officer Schilling had made my city safe for me again. I am horrified and heartbroken that he felt no other way out. As I said, I can't begin to imagine what he had to endure in the days since August 29, 2005. But I ask those of you who watch the video of the NOPD holding down and beating a man on bourbon street, to please say a prayer for Officer Schilling, and to know that here, the horror goes on for some of us in unimaginable ways...
