I had been meaning to get actual, honest-to-god prints of all my photos since... well, since Little Bits was born. I have a thing about it. I mean, it's all well and good to have digital versions of everything, but on the other hand, if someone steals my phone, or there's a break-in and someone steals our laptops, or even if all our digital stuff - devices AND online storage - dies the inevitable slow death of obsolescence, how will I show pictures to Future Me and Future Sidlets?
So last night, I finally collected up all the various, scattered picture files and uploaded them to Walgreens to print. I can still lose them in a fire, but I feel much more relaxed knowing that I have pictures of Little Bits that I can touch.
It wasn't that expensive. Maybe if we ever get a safe deposit box I'll print off another round of the wedding and baby pics.
For a very long time, I've mulled over what sort of legacy would be left by a fully digitized society. We're creating more documentation than ever before, but if you can't hold that in your hands, what does that even mean? Am I being pre-nostalgic? Is that a thing?
I don't have love letters from CMC, but I do have our first email and chat exchanges, and every once in a while I'll go and have a look at them, and wonder if I should print them. They're the love letters of a new age.
