I finished the book I was reading during my lay over in Chicago with about 20 minutes before my flight out. I ran over to the closing bookstore and came very close to purchasing Master and Commander. And then I bought Devil In the White City Instead.

The first chapter has been quite good. I think the best way to put it is thusly: it's like reading a murder mystery wherein the author is way too fond of going off on tangents, that while interesting, don't advance the plot, but because the tangents are interesting, you don't care that's he's going off on them.

Desolation Island is one of my favorites. It was a page-turner!

The horrible old Leopard ruled! in this story (not by the US coast tho). Have you gone through the series? The Leopard has a bit part in a later book. And Stephen, as an old Leopard, is feted by crew. You probably found this already.
