Power is out again for like billionth time, this time for 2 days at least, cuz some ass wipe hit the line with an earthmover 74 times or something. So we are all looking for space to sleep in the office and we have to be here at like 6 am. Sweet!!! So I went back to my room to get pillow, washing materials etc. and it was over 100 degrees inside ( Read more... )

It is. There was a survey done last year about living conditions in Iraq around the different FOBS and Normandy was dead bottom along with Gabe and Echo which has shut down from what I heard. I hated my entire time in Normandy and the only time I had wish i was back there was over election day when the commander decided to send me on a 3 day trip to the Muqdaiyah JCC to run a radar.

I think your deployment experience is totally related to where you are stationed. God I mean I know we're all soldiers and we're all at equal risks but I'd like to shop at a PX and swim in a pool and play at an MWR that's bigger than a GP small. Is that too much to ask. People over at LSA Anaconda or Victory Baghdad (which I had a chance to visit for a few days, was like a damn vacation with hot australian air force chicks!) have no idea what it's like if they haven't actually lived it. Don't even get me started on Kuwait where there's a freakin parking lot at Doha for all those civilian vehicles. I'd be more than willing to deploy there for another year collecting combat pay and getting a second combat patch while never wearing my IBA.

I could live without the pools (Anaconda had two, one indoor and one outdoor), the giant PXes, the full-blown movie theaters, all that. Even Warhorse across town was vastly better than our podunk FOB, and don't even get me started on the CMOC. All I really wanted was a decent chow hall (we didn't get KBR until November, and then only on the 82nd side, and then nobody from TF 1-6 was allowed to park there, then the 82nd commander tried to disallow anyone other than TF 82nd to eat there), a nice PX, and paved roads. Most of the gravel we got didn't even come until after it started raining, and places like Taji have MPs tasked specifically to enforce speed limits. I mean, whiskey tango foxtrot? The disparity between the FOBs is disgusting. I just hope I go somewhere nicer next time around. We earned that at Gabe and Normandy.
