Title: It Pays To Play The Wild Card
Characters: Joker, Bruce Wayne/Batman
Word Count: 456
Rating: PG.
Summary: Joker’s back and he’s ready and waiting for a fight with Batman, but he has a very unexpected ace up his sleeve. Flash fic focussing on Joker’s thoughts before his encounter with the Bat. Nolanverse. Written in the second person.
Disclaimer: Batman and all associated characters/places belong to DC Comics/Warner Bros. I’m only borrowing them - I promise to put them back as I found them!

As usual, you hear him long before you see him. You knew he was coming (how could he resist? He’s always gate crashing your little... parties) but the distant crashes and yells let you know he’s finally arrived.

You giggle quietly and bounce on the balls of your feet. This is it, this is it... the moment everybody’s been waiting for: the grand finale, and my, what a finale it will be! You marvel at how wonderfully things have pulled together, even the things beyond your control (because no matter how many times you say you’re not a schemer, even chaos needs a push in the right direction; all the other actions that play into your hands are just added bonuses).

The muffled bangs and shouts grow louder. He’s getting closer.

“Party’s really getting started now,” you grin darkly and the old man gives you a look of such disgust you can’t help but smile.

Staring at the high ceiling, you frown and try to calculate where he is. You’re getting agitated - you want him here now. You can’t wait to see the look in his eyes when you divulge your little secret; you can’t wait to see how he reacts when he realises that playing the wild card pays off, but you know you must. But, oh, when he sees the ace up your sleeve...

Finally, a shaft of light appears and the whirring and clunking of somewhat unrefined machinery lets you know he’s on his way down.

“Geh-denk, geh-denk, geh-denk, geh-denk...” you mumble in time with the machinery.

He must be at least halfway down by now and you stretch out, clicking your joints in preparation for the fight to come. And there will be a fight - he won’t give up without one. It’ll hurt and he’ll somehow manage to gain the upper hand, of this you have no doubt, but it doesn’t bother you. He wouldn’t be worth the trouble if you knew you could beat him.

The elevator stops with a loud clatter, but you’re some distance away from it. You breathe in deeply and play with the switchblade in your pocket, ready to pull it out when you need it. The approaching footfalls are loud and some of your goons shift uncomfortably, but you don’t feel their fear, just a heightened sense of things. But that’s okay - you need to remember this in all its glorious detail. It is, after all, a true highlight of your career.

You see him before he sees you. He appears suddenly and you note, with a glowing satisfaction, a subtle change in his expression: shock or concern - this is a rather more personal visit than you originally intended.

“Evening,” you say brightly, stepping forward, “Bruce.”

A/N: This fic takes place some time after TDK and is set in the Batcave under Wayne Manor. I can very much imagine Joker wanted to turn up with a little entertainment of his own after the re-building of Wayne Manor and (of course) discovering certain secrets to make for an even more fun-filled evening than planned...
