...is the greatest mindfuck I've read, with the possible exception of Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff. It's not often that a book could completely screw me over, and this one did so magnificently. Hmm... mindfucks. Just the way I like my books =D I'll definitely buy it, but it'll have to wait for a bit, since I'll be using my Daruma for something else this month. Maybe on Bad Monkeys, since you said it was a brilliant mindscrew.

God literature is FILLED to the brim with fantasy and sci-fi. 1984? Gulliver's Travels? A Clockwork Orange? Too many to list that I won't even bother?? But yes, form my own personal experience, many so-called literate scholars are literary snobs. Which is why I take great pleasure in announcing that I'm doing Tolkien for my dissertation haha

I think I'd rec Genesis more than Bad Monkeys, but maybe that's because Genesis is YA.

Yeah, a lot of "literary fiction" is actually sf/f, but by calling them "fabulistic" instead, critics ignore the fact that they have basic sf/f themes :p This annoys me. A lot. Actually, the whole thing with trying to label fiction annoys me - there are literary works in EVERY genre, and some pretty generic stuff in the "literary fiction" category... (-_-)
