Poll Harry Potter: Yes or No?

Just curious, really. Been watching the films while I'm off school sick.
Personally I love them, and the books are legendary, amazing but I wanted to see what other people think.

Prior to beginning writing, i was a major HP freak. But honestly? I still haven't finished reading the last book and i doubt i will before i see the film. I got it the day it came out, but at the time i was already writing Short People and reading just didn't have the same kind of joy as writing gives me. Add that what i DID read (the first 300 pages or so) was just SOOO boring. Like... it wasn't /boring/ but it wasn't like a Harry Potter book. It didn't have the same type of flow and storyline. I gave up in favor of writing and i just haven't started again.

Now I prefer writing to reading. Writing is the most amazing thing in the world and even if i'm not as good as some, it seems to be easier for me than others. I read an AMAZING story the other day that was 23K and took 7 months for the person to write... i felt lazy taking 3 weeks to write a 31K story.

As for the HP films, I LOVED the first 2, didnt like the 3rd as much because they swapped up some things i found important, the 4th ws good but the book was too large to fit in a film that short. The fifth was MUCH better, I loved it too, but then the sixth REALLY pissed me off, because they left out some of the BEST parts and they left out that GIANT epic battle scene near the end that I was DYING to see.

Really? I loved the seventh book, it only took me 8 hours to read. The thing is, they are barely in Hogwarts for it, i mean i love the bits where they are actually in school, like classes and such but still i think it concluded the series well. The first chapter of the half blood prince seemed to bore a lot of people but i didnt bore me...

I was never a HP freak so to say but I absolutly loved the books, they are incredible. Like, i was a huge fan but i wouldnt say freak, i dont know why.

I know what you mean about the writing thing. I write a lot, more in notebooks than on the computer but right now i have a massive writers block. :P Though, i am horrible at updating stuff, i mean you update your fics like every day with loads written and i can hardly find the time ton write a paragraph a day So i feel super lazy. :P

The films are tricky. I think the first two were okay, and then the third and the fourth were amazing but the fifth and the sixth annoyed me. The problem is there is too much in the books to fit into a film. I mean they left loads out of 5 and 6 and i can see they had to but it was still a bit disappointing.

I heard that JK Rowling said that she didnt want any American Actors in the films. What do you think about that? I personally think it would have been okay as long as they could do a british accent. I hate film where it's set in somewhere and then people dont have the right accents! Have you seen Alexander? It's set in Greece and they all have Irish accents. :P and the Boy in the striped pjammas, its set in Germany and they have british accents! It's really silly.

What do you think of the whole, Britain vs. USA thing? I think it's slightly silly because each has different things to be better at, if you know what i mean. And the sterotypes are hilarious. You know the fat american who cant read/the annoying fake and skinny blonde with the little doggie and overly posh and uptight English and the Crazy Irish/Scottish guy. It's funny when used in comedy but really it's just a sterotype and not all of a nation is like that.

I was thinking though, about all of my favourite authors and not one of them was american. Like, I read books by American authors but when put on epic preportions i have yet to read a book that is as good as JR Tolkien, JK Rowling, Eoin Colfer, Cornelia Funke etc. You know what i mean? All i could come up with was Dan Brown. He is fantastic though but not as good as the above in my opinion. I reckon I just need to look harder but I just wanted to know what you thought of the issue. Is British Literature better that American Literature? (Please dont get offended by anything I have said, I like Americans, i have no issue against them i am merely curious)

When i write, i cant just write a little at a time. If i'm only writing a little that means I'm going to have shit. Its just that simple. When I write, it doesnt FEEL like I'm making shit up. It feels like I'm watching a story play out in my head and my fingers have to fight to keep up with the scene and not lose it before it's gone. Sometimes if I can't write, I just start writing something mindless and funny or fluffy or whatever and suddenly I get hit and end up writing 2K words in like... less than an hour.

As for authors, other than JK. Rowling, I dont know of any of the modern writer's nationalities that I've read. I dont usually remember the author, much less where they come from. ALTHOUGH I haven't read a book in over a year, lol. Well thats a lie, I've read a few Nancy Drew books, but thats it. I just dont have time with writing and internet stuff (I usually talk to people most of the day then I write in the early AM hours. Honestly? I can appreciate the world Tolkein created, but the Lord of the Rings books bored the pants off of me. They were SOOOO rambly. And never heard of the Colfer one and OH! I have a book by Cornelia Funke! I have The Theif Lord! Great book. I keep trying to find the film because i hear its pretty good, but oh well.

Honestly, its been so long since I read a GOOD book. Even when I was still reading it was SO hard to find a good one. I'm just so picky. The average young adult books are full of drama and BORING (much like tv shows today, hehe) but then adult novels are 90% full of people complaining about how bad their life sucks. I think I just read all the best books between about 14 and 16... between those ages I read probably 500+ books. Offhand I cant think of many because I just forgot about them. I like historical fictions. I always have. I loved the Mildred Taylor books and I loved all the books sort of like Devil's Arithmatic and Number The Stars and stuff.

I DO like to read, I just read and write fics now, lol.

Fair enough. I dont generally care about Nationalities, I just was thinking randomly. I love to write and right now i am so frustrated because i have insane writers block. It's really annoying, i just cant think of anything to write about.

Eoin Colfer is an author from Ireland, he wrote the Artemis Fowl series, if you havent read them I highly recommend them. :) Have you ever heard of Douglas Adams? He wrote The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, he is phenomenal, absolutely hilarious. It's weird, i started reading fanfic and for like a year thats all i read and i found it messed with my concentration. I found it really hard to get back into reading books. But good books are really hard to find, especially good vampire books, there are so many bullshit ones out there. :(

As for Lotr, I am actually about to start the books, I've seen the films, (how modern of me, to see the films before reading the books :P) and i've been dying to read them. :P

very rarely are films better than the books they're after, but Lord of the Rings films are MUCH better than the books. They're SOOOO wordy! I dont mean like... your average book, i mean RAMBLING! I swear to God i think i remember like... 4 pages describing a rock. It just goes ON and ON! Its like Jane Austen, the STORIES were great but the way they're written is SOOOO boring. Its like... 293092942309423 times more rambling than ANYBODY needs!

The Lord Of The Rings films are timeless, they are seriously what inspired me to try and become a film director. I mean they are just masterpieces but yeah i know what you mean about the books. I read about half of the fellowship of the ring when i was about ten and i remember it being extremely rambly, it's mostly why i gave up. Plus i was ten and hadnt a clue about anything really. :P

I get annoyed when Films dont match up to the books, but recently i learned that most directors arent trying to get as close to the book as possible, they are trying to put their own spin on the tale. This gives me a more open minded perspective when i go to see films based on books, but when they are just plain irrelvant i get pissed.
