Following a number of conversations I've had recently about Christian morality and whether biblical law/morality/ideals apply today, i wrote this little response (specifically to a question Evilel wrote here). So it sorta follows on from my little 'Repression vs Self-control' rant the other day. There needs to be a third one as well which i'll get to ( Read more... )

I have been thinking about what you wrote the past few days. Tis very cool.
I made the same decision from a fairly different perspective...

Having been engaged and totally committed to marrying prior to my relationship with Jesus, I pretty much gave my all into that relationship. Our pastor once described it like sticky tape, or plasticine or something equally sticky, once you stick 2 pieces of sticky tape together, if you try to pull them apart they will never be quite the same as before you stuck them together... bits of stickiness are left on the other piece of tape. The parrallel is, having given myself into that relationship I'm not quite the same as before. I've left parts of me with him, and parts of him have rubbed off onto me. It is fairly painful when a committed relationship ends.

I also think when looking at the commandments in the Bible that God gave them to protect the people. Some were specific to the time like in Deut and Lev where it's dealing with sickness and disease and cutting people off from the community when they are unclean, but many others are still relevant today.
Once I saw it from the perspective of God's protection I realised that not giving myself into a sexual relationship before marriage would save me a great deal of pain.
I often get asked what does it matter now that 'the damage has already been done' but it matters to me...

Sorry for the ramble in yout lj... I really do enjoy reading your posts.
