Another day, another teeth-gnashing brush-in with my mother. Today I thought it would be better if she got out of my life. When I realized that, I cried.

I've got to stop reading 50 Shades for a while. Not only do I fear it's affecting my writing what little I've done anyway (I almost typed, "and my subconcious agreed" and I cringed) it truly ( Read more... )

What I don't understand is how the people who write and publish in media haven't figured out that a lot of romance books have sex in them...

Personally, I think we'd all benefit a lot more if we didn't have to obsessively overanalyze anything that had a single hint of sex in it, and I extend to other works like film and so on. It's like evopsych babbling; everyone feels compelled to give their (obviously grounded in empirical fact!) opinions on sex and what women want from sex from one single trilogy of books to make a fluff piece. This happened when Twilight came out too*. UGHHHHH. Can we just agree to like what we like and leave everyone else the hell alone?

*The personal, spiteful speculation about Meyer got to me the most. I don't think I'll read Twilight, because I'm a slave to historical fiction and hate stories set in school/high school-aged people, but trying to analyze a novel through using the author's biography is seriously sketchy. "The themes x in this book do y" is great, but "Meyer is z and so therefore x is obviously a plot to insidiously !" or whatever - combined with a surface understanding of her life and ambitions and all those things that make a human is such a slippery sort of slope. I mean, who goes around saying writers like Ian Rankin (if you've never read his stuff, he writes a series about an Edinburgh detective, on the realism/grim side) are unhealthily obsessed with violence or anything. But as soon as women and sex are involved - SFJLSJFKD.

(pff, I didn't realize I had so many ideas about this.)
