Where it falls apart in reality is that animals really aren't that complicated -- it doesn't take a genius to see that your cat only loves you for the tuna -- but in fiction, where dating every tomcat, moby dick, and hairy-bellied multiplanar demigod (who happens to take the form of a unicorn when he's on our planet) is a reasonable proposition, the distinction comes in handy from time to time.
As for furries, the problem is that the definition is way too broad to really get anything meaningful from it. What if you're writing werewolf slash, or if one character is an animal in a human body? There's no good place to draw the line. Still, it's fun to say something like "don't furries just have sex with animals?" and then watch as they come a-runnin' from every corner of the internets to defend themselves from those spurious allegations! :D
