Someone at the Mary-Sue posted an article about the idea that Samus might be trans. It went just about as well as expected.
Transphobics seem to have this idea that if you don't have the "right" body parts, you're not trans. "UNLESS SAMUS HAS A DICK, SHE'S NOT TRANS" "BUT SHE'S GOT BREASTS, SHE MUST BE CIS." Yes, lets rip the clothes off of transpeople so we can "prove" they're trans, then gawk and point at them no matter what the results.
Let's say you go up to someone and say, "Are you a boy or a girl? Prove it." If you did that to cispeople, you'd be fucking arrested for harassment. If I talked to a cisguy and asked, "So, what's it like being a boy? May I see your penis?" people would call me out. The cisguy would say, "Dude, stop. You're making me uncomfortable." Everyone would be by his side. (Assuming people aren't thinking 'lol he's a wimp letting the wee wimmenz push him around' but that's a whole other can of worms) If a guy asked a ciswoman, "What's it like being a girl? May I see your breasts?" She and her friends will think he's a goddamn creep, and depending how far he goes, he'll get the police sicc'd on him. But asking transpeople about their genitals? Naaaaaaaaaah, they're so weird and freaky and amazing, like zoo animals! "Hey Mommy, look at the panda! Ooh, crocodiles! Oh look, that girl is a ******!"
You know what profited off showing people's bodies because they were "strange"? Circuses and freak shows. Is that the attitude you want? Is that what you want to be like?
Vivian from Paper Mario 2 is one of my all-time favorite characters, and the transphobic garbage heaped on her is fucking disgusting. I brace myself for the worst whenever Vivian is brought up and avoid reading the comments, because I KNOW there'll be ignorant assholes. There'll be transphobic slurs galore, along with trolls spewing how "ZOMG SHEZ A BOY IN JAPAAAAAAN" or "NO WAY SHE CAN'T BE A ***********" There may be fanboys whining about how Vivian's gender OMG RUIIIINED their sexual fantasies. But even more than that, there'll be sleazy objectification of her. 'Cause since Vivian's trans, that automatically makes her nothing but a sex object. Yeah, forget that she ever had a character arc. Nope, she's just a purple decoration forced to jiggle to inspire boners.
