I went to the Orange County Fair this weekend, it was a grand old time. I haven't been to any kind of fair in some time. Usually just "unfairs", as in life. Boom! Man.. I'm tired and not making any sense. I only partook of BBQ and ice cream, relatively safe and somewhat "healthy" food. Nothing fried such as the fried Pop Tarts, Twinkies, and Snickers Bars being hawked.

However, I came upon one of the saddest sights while also funniest I have seen in a long time. In the craft section of the fair, I learned there was a "table setting" contest, as in setting a table according to a theme, with tablecloths, plates, cups, napkins, silverware, and centerpieces, ect. Something Martha Stewart of Sandra Lee would certainly feature in a magazine.

There were about 30 entries in the contest all together, with 2 subdivisions: holiday themes and general party themes.

One woman had entered the holiday theme subdivision, and her theme was "The Year of the Rat". Her table was decked out with Asian flair (with the unfortunate theme, a plush mouse/rat was the centerpiece) and instead of silverware there were chopsticks.

All the tables had notes from the judges commending or criticizing the tables (or a blend of both). Judges hated high centerpieces (because they would hinder sight and conversation) and also anything slightly unpleasant (Halloween and pirate themes with bones were deemed "unnerving").

This woman with the "Year of the Rat" theme was crying at her stand, because the all the judges had noted was: "Not a holiday celebrated in America. No silverware.".

There wasn't silverware because there were chopsticks instead. "Not a holiday celebrated in America?". What a sad, closed-minded judge!

Her son was standing next to her, and she asked him "You get it right?". The son nodded. "The why don't the judges get it?" she muttered softly. "Why don't the judges get it?". She couldn't grasp the closed-minded judges not comprehending the lack of silverware.

At the same time, why cry over a table setting entry at the Ocean County Fair? Poor woman!
