I finally got a hold of the first six volumes of
Ookiku Furikabutte by Higuchi Asa, the baseball manga that will be animated this spring. It's about a pitcher who had an absolutely awful intermediate school team experience that robbed him of any semblance of confidence, but also about how his high school team comes together. So far I don't feel that crazy passion for this manga that I've gotten reading other sports manga (the pace is really slow and there's a lot of explanation...even more than the usual baseball manga XD), but I love the...positiveness of the manga (even as it kind of flummoxes me). Yes, the various characters may (or may not) have some issues, but they are all...disgustingly positive, forward looking, and above all obedient and eager. Not much of the punks, the attitude, or even the evil nasty bad coaches that seem to litter sports manga. Just...boys wanting to play baseball and parents and coaches that support and lead them. Lots and lots of analysis and strategizing during the games, too. It's almost too much for me, all the details of the calculations they have to go through, but at the same time it's nice seeing people have to actually do calculations and adjustments and strategizing instead of simply relying on raw power or genius or "the power of teamwork." And coaches that give concrete instructions rather than vague philosophical commentary or something are also rather nice.
I'm a bit irritated that volume six ended in the middle of a game and I won't be able to get volume seven for a month. I tried looking around for scans of raws, but there doesn't seem to be comms or forums dedicated to this series? There doesn't seem to be much in the way of scanlations either, which is sad since this is definitely very enjoyable.
I kind of remember seeing some doujinshi out there for this series which I never bothered checking out since I didn't know anything about it. I...am not really feeling the slash. I mean, I can see potential in some of the relationships (or more like the potential a fangirl might see), but I'd rather read regular team/buddy interaction...Or at the most WAFFy type stuff that's just borderline slash. I should do some research and see what pairings are popular...I wonder whether I'll be totally surprised at what I discover. XD
Now I want to go and find more baseball manga. I'm definitely picking up the Adachi Mitsuru one running currently, but hopefully there are others...
I so was going to do another bl novel summary this weekend, but all the new stuff to read just sucked all my attention. :P
