So I heard about the latest goings-on in the IDW Sonic comics and I got mad. Didn't like what was happening with Shadow and I also didn't like that the comics were getting so dark in general. I was so excited when I heard about the Archie comic stopping and Sega wanting something closer to the games, because I thought that meant we'd be getting something more light and fun instead of so dark with such a complicated plot and so many characters to keep track of. But the IDW comic is just going really dark too, and out of utter frustration I decided to do the unthinkable: try Boom.
I looked up an episode guide and found an episode that sounded hilarious, where Eggman wants Sonic to Friend him online. ROTFLOL. I watched that and really was amused for the most part, although I thought the "humor" with that old monkey character getting hit by the car was in horrible taste and not funny at all. And of course, I didn't feel characters were exactly IC. But I can't deny the basic plot was funny, especially when Eggman kept sending Sonic stuff every two seconds. I can relate.
Then I saw a clip from one of the Shadow episodes and decided to look at it, since I'd read about them worrying about writing for Shadow in a way that wouldn't make him look silly or goofy. Well, there are other ways to be OOC. Shadow came across more like Bass, concerned about his pride above all else, and when he accidentally demolished something Sonic and company had been working on, he said their shoddy craftsmanship was a blight on all hedgehogs everywhere, or something equally preposterous and insulting. I also looked up more detailed information on his Boom incarnation and in his other appearance, he gets so upset at indignities happening to him that he decides to blow up the world. **repeated headdesk.** Really? This isn't Shadow at all. And while I can appreciate the writers were trying, I feel like they were just as insulting and unfair to Shadow as if they had written him goofy. Really think about Sonic Adventure 2's climax for a minute, not to mention Shadow's choice to still be a hero and save the world from the Black Arms in the climax of his self-titled game, and tell me they didn't absolutely demolish Shadow's character.
Shadow in the Boom games isn't quite so horrible, but his continually trashing friendship seems really shallow and lame, especially given his backstory with Maria. Of course, Boom Shadow has no known backstory yet, but knowing of the backstory from every other Sonic verse, oh gosh, this is such a trainwreck.
I probably will look around and see if there are other Boom episodes I might find enjoyable, but the Shadow episodes certainly aren't among those, and I highly doubt Boom would ever be satisfactory for me as another verse I could fully immerse myself in. I guess for me, the games and Sonic X are still the only verses I love enough to really consider canon.
