"Milliard," Treize says, voice low and coaxing as his fingers catch lightly at the mask the other man wears, and Zechs turns his face away, the second too long hanging in the air after his hesitation.
"Zechs," he corrects. It's dangerous for someone like Treize to know his true identity and dangerous to trust that he won't betray it. Dangerous, to let Treize remove his mask, a last defence that once gone leaves him vulnerable.
Treize is an honourable man, but his position cannot always afford such lofty values as honour. In times of war, Zechs knows, there is no place for beauty or love or trust, although Treize still cleaves to the beauty of his roses.
The kiss tastes like fine red wine, and it isn't until Treize murmurs against the curve of his lips On the contrary, it is in times of war that such things as beauty are most valuable that Zechs realises he had spoken aloud.
