so, i started a personal project; to learn hokkien and to talk to as many family members as possible to learn more about my family's history;
things I found out today from dad;
1. i was born through caesarean.
2. mom worked in her dad's company first before deciding to go to NIE for better prospect.
3. Dad was 35 when Wei'er was born. He was in Taiwan then for a military exercise. He was only around for ting's & mine birth.
(people from that era has different values. A friend of dad was still in office when his wife went into labor. The friend asked his wife to take a cab to the hospital...)
4. Dad was based in Taiwan from 1994 to 1998
5. Parents decided that it is best that mom&kids stay in singapore for a better education.
6. Ting was named by gugu; supposed to be Serene, but they changed it to Serena
7. I was named after mum's basketball coach because; mum likes basketball, coach said "you must invite me when your baby is born', mum said "i'll name my child after you"
hmm.
w/ regard to my grandparents;
1. Yeye was born in Singapore (dad thinks). Yeye's dad came from Fujian province.
2. Nainai was born in Johore.
3. Dad has no idea how they met.
4. They used to stay at the foot of Mt Faber. A farm house with land sprawling 7 - 8 football fields.
5. Yeye used to work as a driver for an auction company plus he is a self-taught part-time carpenter.
6. All his furniture in the old house was made by him.
7. The first night they had to spend in their new SIT flat (3 room flat in Tiong Bahru) after they got forcibly removed from their 'kampung' was 'disgusting' (quoting dad..) *note: Yeye&Nainai has 12 children (6 boys + 6 girls)
