Dragon Con Day 3
Is it silly that I am still determined to finish this? :P
Last time on Dragon*Con recaps: a few panels and the BSG Colonial Fleet party happened. There were fun tiems. Go find the entry and read it if you wish to know more. ;)
So today was supposed to be a lot of things, and they day turned out nothing like I had thought it would. I'm such a by-the-schedule person, and it was an experience to kind of go with the flow. Here were the plans that I had made for the day:
I had planned on going to a morning church meeting that a D*Con group called Geeks for Christ (or something like that) hosts every year, but I was lazy. I had a (fairly) late night because of the Colonial Fleet party, and so I slept in. I got up at like... IDK, 10:30 or 11 AM. On the docket for the day- I was supposed to have my picture taken with
own_the_sky and Mary McDonnell, but I remembered that I was also supposed to be meeting
heartzablaze around that same time. My plans with Michele (
heartzablaze) had been made the longest, soooo I call Elizabeth (
own_the_sky) to let her know I can't do the picture. A few hours later Michele texts me that her mom isn't feeling well, and she can't come meet me. It's too late at this point to re-make plans for the picture with Elizabeth and MM, so I improvise. Today will henceforth be known as Stargate Day.
I decide to go to the big Stargate Multiverse panel. It featured Rachel Luttrell, Claudia Black, Paul McGillion, Jason Momoa, Ben Browder, and Joe Flannigan. So I go wait in line and meet this really nice lady named Louise who apparently has a hand in organizing/running GateCon (up in Vancouver) and runs a small for-charity multifandom con called Legendary Gathering that happens the day before GateCon. She totally talked me into coming sometime. (If only I had the money! The Sanctuary Experience totally takes precedence for next year's big ticket con.)
Anyway, Louise tells me all of these really interesting stories about the cast/crew of Stargate SG-1. She's met most of them on numerous occasions, so just listening to her was really fascinating. I think the only person she hasn't met was Richard Dean Anderson. She had a few really sweet stories about Michael Shanks and his dad. She made me fall even more in love with Amanda Tapping (if that was even possible). And because of her I really, really want to hang out with Gary Jones and Colin Cunningham. And she made me really jealous because freakin' RICHARD HATCH called her on Thursday and asked her and a few friends to dinner.
Anyway, moving on. I've got looooots of pictures from this panel, so beware. Also, you will realize that I am a total Claudia Black fangirl. Be prepared. ;)
Jason had a "magic trick" that he demonstrated for us. IE: He flipped Paul McGillion a bird for some comment the poor fellow made. Claudia thought it was funny.
Oh, Paul, ILU.
I'm so jealous of Jason's hair.
Claudia's face! I wish I knew what this was about.
So a question asked to Claudia was basically "Who did you like to beat up more, Michael Shanks (Stargate) or Ben Browder (Farscape). Claudia's answer, "That would be like kissing and telling." Laughter and then a long pause as we wait for her to finish. Finally: "That was my answer." LOL.
She then went on to talk about how she thought Michael was a jerk the first time she saw him because he walked straight past her in the hallway as she was trying to say hello. To herself: "Mmm. He might be a bit of a problem. Awesome!" Later she learned that he hadn't seen her there. He saw her on set and really enthusiastically (characteristic Michael, according to Claudia) shakes her hand and goes, "Oh my God! Oh my God!" and is really embarrassed for overlooking her earlier. Then she talks about how they discussed ideas for the Prometheus Unbound fight scene, and how her first opinion of him was totally wrong.
Then Ben says, "So you preferred Michael." Smug look at the audience.
She glances at him flirtingly, "I preferred beating him up because it's all in fun, but with you-"
He interrupts. "But who's the better kisser?"
She didn't hear him, he repeated the question, and then she gives him this really demure look. "Oh, no contest, baby!"
He tries to reply, starts laughing, and then they do this adorable thing where they lean their heads together and start whispering. And then they both start laughing really loud. ♥
Remember how Rachel was late to yesterday's panel and was made to sing? Well, Joe was late to today's panel and he was made to sing as well! He sang "What's the use in getting sober, if you're gonna get drunk again."
Rachel talked about how Joe teased her mercilessly when he had to play the wraith queen on SGA. She was so petrified that her child would see her in this hideous makeup and would be scarred for life. Of course, Joe just egged the idea on and made her feel worse. So she would put on these green facial masks when she was at home and walk around in them for hours to let her baby get used to it. And when he saw her for the first time as a wraith? He laughed. ♥
I love this picture so much.
So then someone asked Rachel "How much fun was beating up Joe Flannigan?"
She grins over at Joe. "A lot of fun." Laughs. "Sorry, Joe." And he does this really cute smirky grin and shrugs his shoulders.
And then she goes on to talk about how Joe never like to rehearse fight scenes, so filming was always interesting. He got bruised and beat up a lot. And then Joe goes, "I liked getting beat up by Rachel. I got beat up by a lot of girls."
Claudia loved all of Vala's different clothes. She was really scared in the beginning that she would just have one or two outfits (like Amanda Tapping). So when the costume people treated her like a new Barbie doll to play dress up with, she really loved it.
Amanda was really jealous of all of Claudia's outfits. Claudia did a really funny impression, which really didn't sound anything like Amanda, but did make me laugh. "Oh, man. I've been wearing these fatigues for eight years!" She then talked about how they created the "shopping moment" with Vala and Sam so Amanda could get all dolled up for a scene. :)
Most of the shiny jewelry and hair barrettes that Vala wears were actually Claudia's things. "It was so inappropriate in that context. Vala bringing bling to SG-1 was her major contribution to army fashion."
Ben goes, "'Cause when you're going offworld you need bling. Just lay low, hide in the bushes, *bling*!"
Claudia waves and grins, "Hi, boys!"
So it was an AMAZING panel and I'm really glad I got to go. I really have no idea what I did after this... I should have written this thing while I could still remember more! :P I think I just walked around and took pictures of people in costume for a while. Maybe this is when I decided to brave the dealer's room for the first time? I walked in, was horrified by the mass of people in such a tiny space, began getting claustrophobic, and promptly left. OH! Then I went to look at the art room. It was much, much less crowed. There were lots of really gorgeous pieces to stare at, so I killed a lot of time just browsing.
I had the choice of going to the BSG panel or the Stargate Support panel at 5:30PM. I reasoned that BSG would probably make it on youtube later (which it now has), so I decided to go to Stargate Support in the Stargate track room. I'm so glad I did! It was very small (read: about 30 people) because the only stars coming were Gary Jones and Colin Cunningham.
I have NO PICTURES from this panel. *sadface* I was on the second row, next to the aisle, center of the room. A great spot, right? Especially when it's such a small room. I should have had wonderful pictures. Not when there's a woman with HUGE 80s hair sitting right in front of me. And she kept PUFFING IT UP throughout the hour. I was so mad because I couldn't even see Colin, and I had to lean to the right to see Gary. Seriously, I almost moved and sat in the floor of the middle aisle. But then I would have been RIGHT in front of the guys, and I didn't want it to be weird or awkward.
But they were so funny (and only a little bit off-color)- that made up for the crappy seating. I really love those guys so much. It was all very informal. They talked for a while, joked around, and then they opened it up to questions. Gary pimped his "Evolution of Harri-man" t-shirt and talked about how Walter got his name. (Don S. Davis with his thick Texas accent was saying "airman", but everyone thought it was "Harriman", and the name stuck.)
One person asked Colin why he didn't think Major Davis had ever been given a promotion in all 10 seasons, and Colin whips out a flute. Gary "interprets" his answer in song while Colin plays. And then they asked the woman what her theory was. So, yeah. It was fun, and I'm glad I picked that one to go to.
I ended the night by going to the Women of Stargate video night in the Stargate track room. It started at 10PM and I had to beg out at around 1 or 1:30AM because of sleepiness. I saw the episode chosen for Sha're, the episode chosen for Sam, and part of the episode chosen for Janet Frasier. I really wanted to hang longer (they had a great lineup!), but I was so tired that I couldn't hang. I trudged back to the Hyatt, squeezed into an elevator, got groped by some drunk dude, and finally made it to my floor. I took a shower and fell in the bed.
Next up: the final day! Oh, the sadness. Lots of fun things happened though! I went to a Stargate panel, a BSG panel, spent the afternoon hanging out with
own_the_sky, and had quite a lot of celebrity encounters. Stay tuned to learn more (and see photographic evidence!). :)
