Miyako grinned as she made her way down the hallway of a familiar Tokyo apartment building. She was glad that her last day before her exams would be spent here.
Hawkmon fluttered beside her carrying a parcel, happy to be out of the home and doing something productive. It was a great day and she was spending it with Mimi! Oh, the excitement was bubbling up. She breathed in deeply and let it out with a smile, raising her fist to lightly knock against the door.
"Do you think they'll like the gifts, Miyako-san?" Hawkmon inquired, peering at the brightly packaged gifts. "We are quite late, indeed. I hope that isn’t against the custom."
Miyako smiled sheepishly, knocking again. "This is Mimi we're talking about; she won't get mad at a present!"
Mimi was humming merrily to a CD playing in her apartment, setting up the dining room table for her company. Palmon watched with a stupefied amusement. Last time she checked, Mimi was still nursing old wounds that Miyako had inflicted. Why the sudden change?
"You seem pretty excited to see Miyako." Palmon observed, taking a basket of individually-wrapped cookies that Mimi had opened for the occasion.
"Well, what can go wrong with a simple birthday offering?" Mimi sang. She knew what Palmon was getting at. But with spring just around the corner, Wallace in Tokyo, and both Jou and Koushirou back on speaking terms with her (or at least attempting to speak with her, she noted sardonically), all seemed right with the world.
Miyako got nervous when no one answered the door. Was Mimi not home?
She knocked again, much louder.
"Miyako-san! You'll disturb the neighbors." Hawkmon chided, feathers ruffling indignantly.
"B-But," The purple haired girl bit her lip, placing her ear to the door. Hey! She could hear faint music in there. Was Mimi ignoring her?! Even worse!
"Mimiiiii!!!!" Miyako wailed, her good day suddenly taking a nose dive. "Are you in there?" Her loud voice made Hawkmon sigh and shake his head.
Palmon looked up at the faint disturbance outside. "Mimi, there's something outside."
Mimi grimaced, and turned down the music. "It better not be those reporters again, or I swear I'll..." She went to the door and pulled it open, to see her spectacled protégé in a dramatic "STELLLLAAAA!!!" pose.
Miyako nearly fell down as the door opened directly in her face. "Ah- Mimi-chan!!" She cheered in glee, and Hawkmon just managed to jump out of the way before getting stepped on. The previously spazzing Chosen smiled warmly and opened her arms for a hug. "It's been so long!"
Mimi stepped back to free the walkway for Miyako and Hawkmon's crash landing into her home. "Please come in."
They both entered quickly, mainly because of Hawkmon's pushing. Taking off her shoes, Miyako looked around observing the apartment. Everything seemed in order.
Hawkmon perched up on the kitchen counter presenting the parcel in his wigs. "For Mimi-san and Palmon! Happy Birthday!" His partner smiled and nodded in earnest.
"I really hope you two like it! I know it's not Palmon's birthday, but it's something both of you can use."
Palmon clapped her hands together in delight, and took the parcel. "Why Hawkmon! Miyako, that's so thoughtful~~!" Palmon smiled up to Mimi. "Isn't it, Mimi?!"
Mimi turned back to the kitchen. She wasn't really angry at Miyako anymore, but some of the residual feelings of the past few months still lingered. "Why don't you go ahead and open it, Palmon?" She pleasantly suggested.
Palmon looked to Hawkmon, "Can I?"
Hawkmon nodded and handed his fellow digimon the parcel. It had taken them quite a long time to finish. He and Miyako worked on parts during their free time to complete the set and they turned out pretty nice if he did say so himself. Though, he was slightly more proud of Miyako-san's contribution, what with her busy schedule and all.
Palmon opened the parcel, and gasped with a tiny squeak. "Mimi, LOOK!" She held up a crocheted placemat with "Palmon" stitched in pink letters. "It's just for me!"
Mimi looked over her shoulder, and a warm smile broke through her once-calm face. "That is so cute, Palmon!" Seeing her digimon expressing such pleasure warmed her heart, and it was difficult not to be endeared towards anyone that would be so thoughtful.
Hawkmon looked positively radiant that his gift had been well-received. He gestured for his partner to do the same. He knew she'd been apprehensive about how Mimi and she were going to make up ever since the whole mess. However, when Miyako got determined there was no stopping her. He knew! Why, he had to stop her from buying 50 placemats worth of yarn when they'd gone shopping.
Miyako smiled almost shyly and handed Mimi her own wrapped placemat. "I made this one."
Mimi blinked, and took the wrapped placemat. "Thank you." She looked down at the paper, and slid a fingernail beneath the tape, opening it in an almost agonizingly slow fashion.
The younger girl was holding her breath as her beloved long-time friend opened the gift. She was doing it much too slowly for her taste! When Mimi did slide the placemat out, Miyako let out her breath and smiled widely.
"Look! I even crocheted you into it!" It was true, there was a blob of... colour underneath the pink letters spelling Mimi's name. It was hard to make out though because the entire mat was less than perfect and seemed to threaten to unravel any minute. "I never knew I was so handy." Miyako laughed.
Mimi fought a grin in vain--she had to keep herself from laughing. But the moment Miyako let it loose, the dam broke, and Mimi couldn't help but join in. "...Miyako-chan...this...this thing...!"
She held it up, and tilted her head. "How do I wash it?"
Miyako looked confused. "In the washing machine of course!"
"It looks so...delicate..." Mimi drawled in an attempt to find the appropriate words.
"No, no!" She replied happily, taking the placemat from Mimi and holding it up in both hands. "Mine is extra special because it can expand to fit any pot or dish! Observe." She stretched the placemat out dangerously, making the little Mimi on it look extremely fat.
Hawkmon squawked. "Miyako-san! I told you not to do that too much or it'd get worse!" He pecked at her and tried to get her to drop it.
Mimi laughed. "Miyako-chan, you were always coming up with the greatest ideas..."
"I'm so glad you like it! Eh..." She tried to squash it back into place but when that didn't work, she laughed. "Uhm, but I worked so hard on it maybe you shouldn't use this one. I could make you another, since you like it so much!"
"Yes, that could be for... decoration." Hawkmon supplied.
Mimi tilted her head, her chestnut tresses bunching at her shoulders. "I'd really like that." She gestured to the table. "Snacks? Tea?"
Palmon stood on one of the chairs, flattening her placemat lovingly across the table's surface.
"Snacks!" Miyako said excitedly.
"Tea!" Hawkmon replied, and then added, "Snacks too, please."
The two sat down in good spirits. "So tell me! What else did you get on your Birthday? I haven't really read up on livejournal about it, but I bet it was super interesting."
Miyako day dreamed about it. "Maybe Yamato-san surprised you, am I right?"
Mimi snorted, pouring cups of tea. "Well, the news about the tour came as a surprise, but no, the time with Yamato was sickeningly uneventful."
She carried the cups over to the table. "Careful, it's hot." She set down a tiny pitcher of milk and a bowl of sugar. "I guess his music is career is just too exciting for him, he's all spent by the time he has a free moment."
Hawkmon got up on the table to help the girls fix their tea. The heat didn't affect his claws after all, and being the only male present digimon or otherwise, made it seem appropriate.
He started to mix Miyako's the way he knew she liked it and said, "Thank you very much for this. How do you take it, Palmon? Mimi-san?"
Miyako accepted her tea from the bird and rubbed the rim of the teacup in thought. "Musicians are a different breed, that's true. Honestly, I admire you for putting up with it! Not that Yamato-san is bad or anything, but the reporters and slander..."
"Sugar for me!" Palmon cheerfully accepted.
"Same." Mimi answered, and then sat across the table from Miyako. "Well, it helps being a reporter, I know how to negotiate with them." Mimi rested her chin on her hand and looked to the side thoughtfully. "It isn't that that bothers me. It's Yama-kun's attitude about the whole thing. I think he forgets that I'm one of them, too."
"This send off party will be a good way to make him remember then!" Miyako nodded confidently. "He'll realize how much he's going to miss you and everything will work out!"
Hawkmon could tell this was fast becoming a Girls Only talk and took a way out. "Miyako-san I think I want to look around. Palmon, I've never been here before, would you honor me in giving a tour?"
Palmon grinned. "There isn't much to see, but sure!" She hopped off the chair, but not before giving her tea another good sip.
Mimi smiled sideways. "Yeah...that's what I was thinking...that everyone could give him a little something to take with him to remember us while he's away."
That's the kind of thing Miyako wanted to hear from her friend. She chomped on a cookie and made the bingo sign. "Then let's get started! Can I use your computer? We should make a list of everyone invited, make the invitations, figure out an itinerary, and figure out the food. Oh, and of course - Plan what day!"
Mimi sipped her tea. "I still don't know what exact day he is leaving. It keeps getting pushed back." She sighed. "It's frustrating."
She gestured towards the bedroom. "But help yourself. Just please don't fry it like Koushirou-kun did."
Miyako was already out of her chair but froze. "Koushirou-sempai... did... what?!" She blinked, and then blinked again. "HUH? How is that possible!?"
"It was sabotage, I tell you!" Mimi pointed dramatically. "I wanted to go to Roppongi Hills for my birthday, but nooooo he wanted to go to Akihabara so he decided to fry some chip or something so we would have to get a replacement!"
Still a little shocked, Miyako made her way to Mimi's computer and flopped into the chair. "That still doesn't seem like Koushirou-sempai. At least, to waste a perfectly good computer part!" She booted up the machine and hummed to herself.
"What was he doing on the computer anyway? Maybe I could look at it."
"I wanted him to install a Digital Portal into my computer, since I didn't have one for Japan." Mimi followed Miyako into the bedroom. "I was asleep while he was doing it, so I don't know if that was what he was really doing..."
"Well knowing Sempai, he was bound to get distracted by something more interesting. Then again, installing a Digiport is pretty fun! I could do it and you can make a list of everyone to invite by hand." She nodded furiously, already pulling up the necessary programs to override and typing code at an alarming rate.
"Would you?!" Mimi happily gasped. "Oh Miyako-chan!" She glomped Miyako around the shoulders and nuzzled her like a puppy nuzzling a new toy bone. "You're a lifesaver, just in time for my Friday visit, too!"
For the moment, the younger girl basked in Mimi's affections and grinned from ear to ear. It was so good to have everything back to normal again. Life just wasn't as good if Mimi was mad at you.
"Allllright! Digiport Open!" She shouted and assuming battle position, Miyako hunched typing like a madwoman. She'd get this set up and running faster than Koushirou-sempai could say 'Prodigious!'
Mimi pumped her fist in the air, cheering Miyako on. "Miyako-chan, you are the coolest!" Who needed stupid ol' Koushirou when she had her own little tecchie fan club on two legs? Not Mimi, that's for sure!
Mimi hopped around her bedroom merrily. "Gonna go to the Diiiigital World. Gonna go to the Diiiigital World." She sang.
Miyako pushed her glasses up her nose because they always slipped down when she coded this way. "Planning to go to the Digital World?" She questioned then ordered, "Don't forget to write that list! Productivity, productivity-execute this sucker here-" The girl dove back into what she was doing.
Now Miyako was speaking a whole different language. "List...list..." Mimi looked around aimlessly.
Hawkmon entered the room with Palmon "I say, Mimi-san, how did Wallace-san and Gummimon arrive to Japan? Relatively in one piece I hope!"
Mimi turned to the digimon. "Oh yes! All in one piece, and lots of Reese's!" She giggled, giving a victory V.
Palmon clued Hawkmon in. "Mimi has this obsession with an American chocolate you can't get here."
The bird digimon looked intrigued but didn't question it. He noticed his partner's catatonic programming state and sighed. "There she goes again! Instead of fiddling with that digiport I was hoping to actually go there one day soon. It's been a long while since I've been."
He looked at Palmon in question. "When are you two taking a trip?"
Palmon smiled. "Mimi set up something with Gennai on Friday. We're making each other dinner or something."
Mimi winked. "Gennai has a thing for takoyaki, it seems!"
Hawkmon looked excited. "I wish Miyako would make those kinds of arrangements more often! Well, with her exams tomorrow, maybe she'll finally be over with this 'I have no time to even look at the time' business."
The girl in question suddenly rose from her chair and held her digivice out like a sword. "Alright! Let's see if this works - and it should! - Digiport Open!" The interface rearranged itself, once, twice, and everyone watched with bated breath as it finally settled and the light switched on.
"Yay!!" Miyako cheered.
Mimi clapped. "Miyako-chan, you're a genius!" She clasped her hands together and her eyes got sparkly. "How can I ever repay you?!"
This totally widened her social pool by, like, 200 percent!
At the sudden gratitude, Miyako rubbed at the back of her head in embarrassment. "It's nothing Mimi-chan. In fact, it was really good practice for tomorrow!" She waved her hands and adjusted her glasses. "Let's see that list now."
Mimi looked at her list ."Well, essentially it is all the same as everyone else, I imagine...though I have Catherine on here too, since I am going to be abducting her for hanami whenever we do it..."
"Ok," Miyako typed it up, pulling the information into a template card she'd e-mailed herself before coming over. "So I guess we can e-mail the invites then. I suggest typing in the date of the party here." She pointed to the screen so Mimi could see. "When you know the best time. Ah! Wallace is here now, isn't he? I wonder where he lives." Miyako remarked absent mindedly as she added in about fifty balloons on the graphic.
Hawkmon nodded at that. "I said I would visit him!"
"Oh, you didn't know?" Mimi blinked innocently. "He's staying with Ken-kun. Lucky, huh?" She beamed.
Miyako's face made a weird mix between spazz and doom. "R-Really..." She her typing slowed then sped. "Catherine-san sure seems nice, huh! I hope she brings a souvenir, that'd be so cool. In fact, I should buy some for her! Hahahaha," Nervous laughter always sounded scary in Hawkmon's opinion.
"Miyako-san, do you want a cookie?" He tried cautiously.
"Yes! Yes, that would be perfect Hawkmon!" She continued typing.
The Digimon looked helplessly at the other two and whispered. "I think that subject is still taboo!"
Mimi blinked. "Which subject?"
"Mimi!!" Palmon hissed.
Mimi gasped. "OH!" She cupped a hand over her mouth, and looked sympathetically at Miyako.
"Yes," Hawkmon agreed. "Ever since she saw him with Daisuke-san and Takeru-san on Friday she's been a bit cuckoo, but I didn't use that word if anyone asks." The digimon then hopped over to his partner and patted her back. "I'll get that cookie for you now, Miyako-san."
"Yes please, with three sugars."
"Huh?" Hawkmon paused in question. "Cookie, Miyako-san, not tea!"
"Yes three, please!" She said more sternly. Hawkmon backed away and flew out of the room. He knew the damage Miyako could inflict if she blew up. Sweets usually solved everything!
Mimi blankly stared at Miyako, and then exchanged glances with Palmon. Her partner nodded, and followed Hawkmon back into the kitchen.
"Miyako-chan, you know--I know you think I don't trust you. But I am here to listen if you need me to." Mimi worded her thoughts as delicately as possible.
The girl sighed and rubbed at her eyes under her glasses. "No, it's me who should say that I'm sorry. Mimi-chan, I just have been getting these bad headaches lately and on top of the studying, I haven't really had time to go out and resolve those problems that are bothering me. I'm just glad I studied extra hard so I could be here today. It's when you say things like that that I feel 100 percent better!"
Mimi smiled slightly. "You're really good at convincing me that, but..."
She looked to the side. "If it was me, it wouldn't be that easy.”
"How's that?" Miyako gestured to the cards, and the list of different foods each guest could bring. "I promise I'll talk all this through with more people! That's what friends are for, right?" She grinned and pushed up her glasses. "Maybe I'll even take a trip to the Digital World - just Hawkmon and I. That could help me out!" She stood up and cracked her fingers.
"Do you mind if I use the washroom?"
Mimi smiled. "Certainly." She backed away from the chair to let Miyako stand.
"Thanks!" All that tea had definitely gotten to her.
She entered the small but quaint bathroom and did her business. She washed her hands and then splashed some water on her face to calm her nerves. While working on the Digiport one of those horrible headaches had crept up. Luckily, it didn't turn out that bad but still Miyako was worried. Was she developing some migraines?
"Hmm..." She searched around for a towel then dried her hands. Out of the corner of her eye she spotted a cute bottle sitting just inside the shower door and stooped to pick it up. Hoping it wasn't too big an invasion of privacy, Miyako opened it up and too a sniff.
Oooh! This is so sweet! The girl read the label. I wonder where she bought this, it smells so nice. Curious, Miyako stuck her head into the shower completely, looking around to find any more neat things.
Just then Hawkmon opened the door, and it swung hard catching Miyako in the side and sending her flying.
"AAAAHH!" She screamed.
"Miyako-san!" Hawkmon stared as she landed, straight in the toilet. "Were you... snooping?"
Miyako glared and then gulped. "I'm.... stuck."
Hawkmon surveyed the damage. "Oh dear!" He didn't like the way his partner was eyeing him so he took a step back but that made Miyako glare even harder.
"Don't just stand there! Help me out!" She squeaked.
"I-I'm not trained for this sort of situation." Hawkmon complained but grabbed her hands and pulled anyway. She didn't budge. Miyako almost cried. "It was all those extra desserts!!"
Palmon crawled over Hawkmon to see what the commotion was all about. "Miyako, are you okay?!"
Mimi looked up from the computer.
"Everything okay in there?"
Miyako shimmied around but couldn't get her leverage. "Ah-Everything's fine! Just-" Hawkmon pulled her even harder now, "Ack! Where did you get this lovely soap?!"
Mimi joined the rest of the group in the bathroom, and picked up the bottle of body wash. "Oh, this was a birthday present Jou-sempai dropped off while I was out." She shot Palmon a glare to keep her silent.
"Need help?" Mimi offered Miyako a hand.
"Uhm.. yeah." Miyako blushed in embarrassment and together they managed to pull her out of the toilet. Noticing the wet seat of her pants she panicked. "I can't go out like this!!"
Mimi nervously smiled. "You can borrow one of my skirts, but it might get kinda short..."
Hawkmon observed the wet cloth and suggested using a hairdryer could do the trick. "Do you have one Mimi-san?"
"Of course." Mimi nodded. "It's an American one, so it's a little more powerful."
Palmon put her vines to her cheeks. "Please be careful not to set her pants on fire!"
Miyako paled. "Just what I need, a fire in my pants!"
"Tell you what." Mimi walked back to her closet. "How about I give you some of my favorite American jeans. They're magic, they fit perfectly, any body type. Just like in that book." Mimi pulled off a pair of dark wash jeans. "I have an extra pair, so we can be like, the Bobbsey Twins, or something."
Miyako's eyes welled up as she took the jeans from her. "R-Really?" She held them up to her and it looked about right. "I'll put them on right now!"
Hawkmon closed the door so she'd have privacy, because she'd begun changing in her excitement. "Mimi-san, what a lovely gift!"
Mimi posed confidently, and gave a thumbs up with a wink. "I knew it! Mimi-chan's pants suit you very well! Go ahead and keep them!"
"Oh my god!!" Miyako jumped in glee. The jeans really did fit perfectly! "Onee-sama~~!!" She hugged Mimi tightly. "Thank you so much!"
Her digimon partner smiled but then noted the time. "Miyako-san, I think it's time we be heading back. Your exams are tomorrow after all! You need your rest."
Mimi gasped. "OmiGOSH! Exams?! You really DO need the pants!"
"Yes, her exams!" Hawkmon said sternly.
"Oh relax, Hawkmon. You worry too much." Miyako beamed. "My Onee-sama's pants will bestow good luck on me everywhere I wear theeeem!!!"
She was practically jumping from spot to spot as they made their way to the doorway and she stepped into her shoes. "I'll never take them off!" Miyako said in delight causing Hawkmon to make 'why me' gestures.
"Palmon, it was lovely. Mimi-san, thank you for having us!" He bowed. Miyako bobbed her head up and down in sentiment.
Palmon beamed. "Good luck on your exams, Miyako. Hawkmon, let's go to the Digital World sometime!"
Mimi waved. "You don't need luck, Miyako, you're an ace!"
Miyako bingo'd. "But with Mimi-chan's Super Girl Pants, I'm number one! I'll see you again soon Onee-sama! Can I pick you up after work sometime? It will be so fun!"
Mimi smiled, and hugged her arms. "I would like that."
"Great!" Miyako grinned. "And don't worry about the send off party, we'll make it the best ever! Hawkmon can be the piñata if things get too stale."
"Hey!" The bird interjected in fear and anger.
The girl stuck her tongue out and laughed. "Just kidding. Thank you for such a great day, Mimi-chan, Palmon. See you soon!"
