Частные школы, советы

Разрыв шаблона - ходила с коллегами на ланч, речь зашла о школах, все! кроме одного (у которого трое детей) говорили о том, что их дети либо уже в частных школах, либо они сильно об этом думают/планируют.

Oh, there are lots of people like that. Prolly has more to do with what they can afford as opposed to their local schools not serving their needs. I personally know someone who did it (and then was asking around for math tutors for his kids). Go figure. For the amount of money he was paying the fancy private school in Cambridge, I would expect them not to need it!

I think for a self-motivated student, no, it would not matter.
I'm sure there is selection bias going on as well.

Why not? This logic escapes me :) Even at a private school a kid can't get as much attention as a private tutor will provide. On top of it, even at private schools there will be kids who will be doing worse than everybody else in the class :) And those kids will want tutors to get better.

If I'm paying lots of money for something - I expect good outcomes! :) My kids can be stupid in a public school for free. But if I'm paying you 30K/year for each one - they'd better be friggin' geniuses, or else! :)

What is a good outcome? If your kids is doing very well but many peers are doing better, is it a good outcome or bad?

I don't think people make decisions like that. I think people look at their particular child and think whether this particular child will do better (academically and emotionally) at a public school or a private school. People don't think about geniuses or anything like that.

I think that many people probably put a lot less thought into schools question than you give them credit for.

Why would you think that?
It is not an easy decision to spend over $20K a year on a kid even for wealthy and especially if they live in a nice neigborhood so I am absolutely sure that people think about schools a lot.

I think that most people that go to these schools have way more money than you think, and spending that money is not that big of a deal. Not necessarily based on what they earn, but what they inherited/family wealth. I know people who went to expensive private schools because their whole families went there, and it's just the thing to do.

I am not really sure why you think that you are better informed than I am :)

That's what I see here in Newton. It could be different in CA because your public schools are generally much worse than public schools in MA.

I'll second what prosha is saying, and I do see plenty of people from Newton who send their kids to private schools. It's not "just because we have too much money". I'm curious what private schools you think admit people on those basis anyway. It's not like there is a shortage of applicants for each private school spot, either.

I am actually sure that money and legacy are taken into consideration when kids are admitted. More so with elementary schools probably. But overall, these schools are not stupid. They want some rich, they want some very smart, they want some diversity. All of those group will serve its purpose to make the school better w/o going bankrupt.
