Sounds like Shauna is a game-player of the highest order, though I doubt that she's a scammer/grifter otherwise she'd have gotten more out of your brother than a phone card by now. Although he has decided to accept her explanations for the moment, you should (in a sisterly way) encourage him to find someone to date in the REAL world (easier said than done, I know...) - it's too easy to invent a cooler, more mysterious persona online. The old fashioned way is still the best.
She would never be allowed to have a cell phone in intensive care (where she'd BE if she was in a stable coma). Also, the inconsistancies between her, and her parents' reactions need to be addressed. She's playing possum because he was asking too many questions, and she decided to dial up the distress and angst in order to keep him in savior mode. If he can't see this as the obvious emotional chicanery that it is, he'll get into more trouble with her. It's time for HER to start proving herself to him, and if she won't, then she's gotta go.
I hope that your brother comes out of this alright, Inns.
