Chapter One
I looked deep into Link Larkin’s eyes after we shared our kiss in front of the whole audience of the Corny Collins show and millions of people who were watching. I didn’t care who was watching me. I just shared a kiss with my crush who I have had for 3 years. Amber Von Tussel came up to me and Link and pulled us apart.
“Link, What the hell do you think you are doing!?”
She shouted in Link’s face. He kept his stare at me the whole time and ignored Amber who was yelling at him.
“Amber, I don’t love you like I love Tracey. You only wanted me for a status. I don’t like being in relationships like that. It’s over Amber.”
He brushed past her and grabbed my hand and we walked away. We both could hear Amber yelling his name as we walked away from her.
“So does this mean...we are together?”
I asked him looking deep into his blue eyes.
“Only if you want to be hun.”
He said rubbing his hands on my shoulders. My heart always beat a different beat when I thought about Link or when I was near him. I grabbed his hands and held them within mine.
“I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else but you Link.”
I said sincerely. He leaned down to my height and kissed my trembling lips.
“Well good hun because you are stuck with me now!”
He chuckled as we continued to walk off the set of the Corny Collins show to see my mom, Edna Turnblad.
“Hello there Mr and Mrs Turnblad”
Link said as we approached them.
“Oh Link you don’t have to be all formal with us. Please call us by our first names.”
Edna said giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Link gave my parents a smile.
“You were so great out there Tracey! I have never seen you dance like that!”
Edna said looking at me in the eyes.
“And Link! You were great as well!”
My mom gave him a big hug. I looked at Link while he was getting hug and you could tell he wasn’t expecting this kind of hospitality from them.
“Oh thank you Edna.”
He said giving her a smile.
“Tracey are you going to be home for dinner?”
My mother asked me.
“Yes mother but is it okay if Link comes too?”
I asked grabbing Link’s hand and holding it with mine. Edna looked toward her husband and gave a smile.
“Of course it is alright as long as it’s okay with you Link hunny.”
My mom said. Link looked at me and held my hand tighter.
“Of course it is. Thank you very much Edna.”
He gleamed. Link and me walked off past my parents to find Seaweed and Penny in the corner cuddling.
“Hey you two!”
Link said startling the couple. They walked toward us and gave us a smile.
“So I see you guys are happy together!”
Penny said holding hands with Seaweed. Link looked at me and gave him one of his famous winks.
“Yeah. It was meant to be.”
I said to them.
“Well I know that I can never go back home again.”
Penny said.
“Why’s that?”
Link asked in confusion. I looked at Link and realised that I never told him about Penny’s mother.
“Sorry Link. I thought I told you about her mother. Penny’s mother is a very religious woman and well seeing as she just declared herself as a ‘checkerboard chick’ tonight on live television there is no doubt that her mother saw that and is probably waiting for her to come home to kill her.”
I explained to Link.
“How can your mother be like that? Doesn’t she know that the times are changing and that people accept whites with blacks?”
He asked Penny as she held Seaweed’s hand.
“I guess not. I keep telling her that the times are changing but she claims me as the ‘devil child’ I don’t know what I am going to do. I guess I could go home and hope there’s a chance she didn’t see it...oh who am I kidding!”
She threw her hands up in the air and stormed off to the back of the set. Seaweed followed.
“Guess we should leave them alone for a bit.”
Link said wrapping his arms around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck.
“Have I ever told you that you have the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen?”
He leaned closer to my face and I could feel his breath lingering on my lips. My heart began to skip a beat just like it did for the past 3 years. I closed my eyes and brought my lips to meet his and kissed him. It was such a sweet and innocent kiss that had such a big significance to both of us. We broke apart from the kiss and just stared into each other eyes while continuing to hold one another.
“Is this a dream Link? Does someone need to pinch me because this just cannot be real!”
I said while chuckling.
“No babe. It’s not a dream. This is real life.”
And with that he leaned in and kissed me with more force this time. When we ended the kiss I looked to my left to see Seaweed comforting Penny. My heart broke for the situation that she was in. I walked out of Link’s grasp and walked toward them.
“Look I know what I am going to say isn’t going to make much of a difference but I am always going to be here for you. You have been there for me and I am going to be there for you.”
I said placing my hand on her shoulder. A smile appeared on her face and her arms wrapped around me and she gave me a big hug.
“Thank you so much Tracy. That means a lot to me.”
She broke out of the hug and wiped her tears and held Seaweed’s hand and smiled.
