Well... we got some rather unfortunate news yesterday.
Drizzt (our big black kitty) is diabetic.
I've never had a pet with that before. He's at the vet's now and has been since Monday morning so that they can regulate his blood sugar. They said it could take 2-5 days or so to figure it out. Pregnancy hormone levels and being worried sick about a pet who you know absolutely hates being at the vet truly sucks. Once we get him home we get to give him special food and shots, etc. Hopefully we'll work out some semblance of routine before Samantha arrives.
My big worry at the moment is that the vet says he won't eat. They try giving him the special diabetes dry food and nothing. They give him the moist diabetes food and still nothing. I just spoke to hubby on the phone (he's been the liaison with the vet since I'm usually too upset to formulate sentences for him). The vet says he hasn't had a cat give him this much trouble in 2 years. For those of you who know Drizzt -- he's just a big, fuzzy baby but take him to the vet and he's this growling, hissing, fang-baring monstrous version of his sweet self. The vet says that grabbing him by the scruff does nothing -- although I just think Drizzt is incapable of doing that kitty-limp thing that scruffing a cat usually does.
How long can a cat go without food? I really, really want to visit him but I'm not sure if they allow it or if it'll make it worse on Drizzt seeing me and then not being able to leave with me. The vet wouldn't even let us leave a toy with him. I just want him back home. Now. The house just doesn't seem right withut him.
