Chapter: Two
“Niel-ssi, what’s that?” The photographer stopped clicking the shutter. “No one doing that pose anymore these days. Give me something else.”
The singer brought one hand under his chin and placed another one awkwardly on Jonghyun’s shoulder, his partner for the photo shoot. He then threw a glance towards the photographer and saw his dim expression.
“Nope?” Niel asked innocently and the photographer only nodded. The singer laughed awkwardly and quickly apologizes, face flush with embarrassment.
He was never comfortable standing in front of camera lenses but he never been this helpless before. He just couldn’t focus on the photo shoot. His mind keeps on wandering to the incident in the waiting room.
“Let’s try with you sitting down. How about that?” The photographer suggested and Niel could only nod. His assistant quickly brings a wooden chair into the set.
After a few clicks, the photographer finally got what he wanted. He signalled towards him and Jonghyun that it was done before turning to his assistant. “Who’s next?”
“It’s Chunji-ssi and L.Joe-ssi.”
Niel’s ears perked up at the mention of the names. He stepped out from the set and stood by the monitor screen behind the photographer as he eyed the two of his fellow members walking into the set. He was worried for them and wondering if they could carry out the task without creating unwanted scene.
But contrasting to his agonize about what could possibly happen, the two of them get to work almost immediately without any setback. They had no problem fulfilling the photographer request one after another, showing off their great chemistry. Niel was genuinely amazed. Have they been this professional all these while? How do they hide their feeling? How can they pretend like nothing happen?
“How do you do that?” Niel asked to no one in particular, not taking his eyes off of the monitor screen. A picture of Byunghun’s eye smile and Chanhee’s genuine laugh was on display.
“What? Being all natural in front of the camera?” Jonghyun asked back, startling the singer. There was a hint of amusement in his voice. “You know that they put extra effort for this, right?”
Niel wasn’t sure if the maknae were implying something, so he just remained silence.
“I guessed something happened when I’m left room earlier huh?” Jonghyun whispered to him. “Didn’t I tell you not to meddle in? You better call off your plan for tonight-”
“It’s too late.” Niel muttered.
Jonghyun narrowed his eyes as he looked at him. “You’ve sent that message?”
Niel sighed, feeling horrible to have to admit his mistake again. He chooses to disregard Jonghyun’s question. “What really happen between them?”
“That’s... none of your business.”
“For God sake Jonghyun, I need to know!” Niel snapped before he remembers to lower his voice. He looked at his surrounding, making sure that no one pay attention to them. “Chanhee came and punched Byunghun on his face! Do you know how shock I was?” He hissed as he watched Jonghyun's eyes widened in horror. “I wouldn’t send that fucking message if I knew that Chanhee and Minsoo has a thing going on! And you know about it, but you choose to not telling me! All of this won’t happen if you tell me everything! So it’s practically your fault!”
Jonghyun’s expression changed into something unreadable; probably still musing about how this is his fault but Niel was pretty sure that the maknae wasn’t stupid to understand his point. But he probably still not convinced enough to give what Niel has demand from him.
“Look, I promised Byunghun that I will explain everything to Chanhee and Minsoo. But I need to know what’s going on first so I won’t prick into the problem deeper. Please...”
It took a long moment of silent conversation between the two, before Jonghyun eventually sighed in defeat. “Meet me at the practice room after your last schedule.”
***
If only he could memorized his schedule - which only finished at eleven that day - he would have forced Jonghyun to spill everything out, right then at the studio. He was lucky that he didn’t flop the show recording. He thought he did fairly well judging from the compliments he received from the production crew. He managed to stay focus on his work and not letting his curiosity gets to him, even though all the while, his mind was in a turbulent whirlwind thinking about it.
Jonghyun was sitting on the floor of the practice room when Niel came to find him. He was panting and sweating profusely after what Niel supposed; a rousing dance routine. The older grabbed two bottles of water at the corner of the entrance and tossed it to the dancer before he sat down next to him. He watched as Jonghyun gulped down the water, waiting patiently for the younger to begin despite the urges to strangle the younger and threaten him to start talking.
“You’re right, I should have told you. Or even Chnaghyun,” Jonghyun finally said. “But Byunghun, he... he was afraid of what you would think of him, if you know what he did-”
“What had he done?” Niel asked impatiently.
Jonghyun glanced up to him. “Do you remember that Byunghun and Minsoo were pretty close back then?”
“Yeah, ever since they took rapping lesson together.” Niel reasoned out. He remembered how Minsoo had taken alike of Byunghun when they first met; simply because he came from the state - a much cooler environment and culture according to the leader.
“They were even closer after they start taking interest in writing music. I think that was when Byunghun started to develop his feeling for Minsoo, just about the same time Minsoo was falling for Chanhee.”
Unrequited love. Of course, Niel has considered it. What else could it be? And if Minsoo and Chanhee were together, that would only lead to one circumstance.
“Did Byunghun...”
“Confess? He did. Just a week after Minsoo asked Chanhee out. Does he know that they were together when he confessed? Yes, he knew but he still did it. That was why Minsoo was so angry with him. It literally ruined their friendship.”
“That hyung is impossible,” Niel muttered under his breath. He was just unsure how to feel about Byunghun. Should he feel sorry for him that Minsoo choose Chanhee over him? Or should he feel angry at him for betraying Chanhee like that? Niel knew the elder is the selfish kind, but he wouldn’t think that he would have the heart to do that to Chanhee, his best friend.
“Then he asked Minsoo to pretend like nothing happen. Minsoo complied for a little while but I guessed he was feeling uncomfortable keeping things from Chanhee. So he told him but it was after a month of pretending. Chanhee got so angry that he decided to break up with Minsoo.”
Niel gasped in surprised. “To that extend?”
“Yeah. But Byunghun was quick to apologize to Chanhee. He literally begged Chanhee to forgive Minsoo and make a promise that he would stayed away from him.”
“So they were okay?”
“On the surface? Yeah. Byunghun did keep his promise. He really stayed away from them both. He didn’t talk to Minsoo unless it was work-related. He tried to keep himself busy like taking up that acting class and going out a lot.”
Jonghyun threw him a look, hinting for something and Niel could only look down guiltily in response. There was a time when they didn’t get to see Byunghun because he was so occupied with his activities. And the fact that the rapper always seems so hostile when they asked his whereabouts, making everyone worry for him. He remembered going to the management himself, how he had called Byunghun as selfish prick when he found out that the rapper has secretly signed up for an acting class. They got into a huge fight. If only he knew Byunghun’s sole motive was to escape from spending time in the dorm, to mend his heart.
“Wait a minute, how do you know all this? Did Byunghun tell you himself?”
“Chanhee did. He came to me and asked me to keep an eye on Byunghun. He didn’t trust Byunghun. He explained everything to me and because at that time, I was mad at Byunghun for what he did, so I agreed to be a spy.” Jonghyun paused and sighed. “But do you have any idea how hard it was for Byunghun? How he force a smile every time he sees them together? How he came out with all kind of excuses to avoid being with them? How he lies through his teeth every time people asked him if he was alright when he was not?”
Niel tried not to remember Byunghun’s sad face that he saw today - the one that he wore to sleep after the incident. It was the worst he had seen on him. If he had a choice, he didn’t wish to see them again.
“So I tried to talk to him. I thought he was going to push me away, but Byunghun was surprisingly calm when I told him I know what happened between them. He was ashamed of what he’d done so he made me promised not to tell you or Changhyun, that’s why I keep my mouth shut.”
“What about Chanhee? Why he didn’t say anything?”
Jonghyun shrugged. “Minsoo probably begged him not to. Maybe he feels sorry for rejecting Byunghun, who knows?” Jonghyun muttered and Daniel raised his eyebrows.
“Did he?” Daniel questioned but Jonghyun just shrugged his shoulders. Something caught the younger’s attention as he walked up to the only window in the room.
“It will be really awkward to be around them once you knew about this whole situation. You might wish that I didn’t tell you anything.”
“How bad could it be?”
“You’ll see.” Jonghyun sneered at him.
Niel frowned. It was kind of ridiculous that he didn’t notice anything at all. Apart from a couple of time where Minsoo had gotten angry when he teased him excessively about Byunghun, he don’t remember witnessing the awkward atmosphere Jonghyun had to deal with for almost three months now.
“Hey, what time did you told Minsoo to meet Byunghun?”
“What? Do you think any of them will show up?”
“Well, the lights are on.” Jonghyun replied as he pointed to the direction the composition room was on the opposite block. Niel stood up hastily to check if Jonghyun were telling the truth.
There was a dimmed light coming from the mentioned room. Niel didn’t know what this mean. If things were as good as what Jonghyun had told him, none of them should turn up. It couldn’t be Minsoo; turning up would mean he’s been cheating on his lover. It couldn’t be Byunghun either; turning up would break his promise to his friend. Could it be Chanhee? Perhaps, he came to see which of the two would break his heart again.
“Yah, Jonghyun! Should we go and check-” Niel’s voice echoes in the empty room as he turned from the window. The dancer was already one step ahead of him. “That son of the bitch.”
