Someone this week told me they had a rule about anything that gets to take up space in their house: it must be beautiful or useful, and that means now. In all my years, I've not heard anything as simple as that. There's the "well, I might need it at some point so it goes on the top shelf" rule, or the "if you haven't worn it in a year it goes" rule, or the "summer clothes go in the loft in winter" rule (as if I have such a thing as summer and winter clothes!), or the "everything goes in a box" rule, or the "everything has its place" rule... well, I'm sure everyone's heard a tonne of different ones.
The only one that's really made a difference to me in the past is the "you can make a difference in 20 minutes" rule (courtesy of

Beautiful or useful.
Wow, I just cleared out a tonne of stuff. With no worries and no guilt whatsoever. And I have a pile of clothes to go to the clothing bank.
