My sister is buying a new house, and she and my parents came to me this morning with a proposition. Namely, that I buy her old house (a 2 bed terraced in Harold's X just beside the canal) with my parents' help

I know theres more to life than owning ur own house but its what most people seem to strive towards.. With house prices increasing by the day getting on the property ladder is so hard for a single income buyer!
ur being handed quite a good deal, you'd be mad to pass it up!

1 thing u could try is agree to take it - but rather than take a full time job just let it out and stay at ur parents that way you can keep doing ur phD by day and you'll have someone else paying ur mortgage for you?

I must disagree with Vinny on this. Home owning is an obsession, and a bad one at that! I say move to Germany and rent forever, never give in to mortgages, 9-5ism and talking about IKEA for the rest of ur life. U take on that house and ur instantly old, tied down and on the slippery slope to tosserism! Thats just my 2, particularly immature, cents.

But the whole continent does it! This home owning obsession is an Anglo Saxon thing, and its probably why we all turn into a bunch of cynical, unhappy adulterous and unhappy crazies. Yes, I blame property for all of society's ills!
