I've had a whole lovely day of deep thought and consideration regarding the future of this community, and this is what it comes down to

From now on this community is going to be friends only, and I'm going to ask you all to go back to your posts and f-lock them.
A lot of people used innocence_jihad posts for their own references/researches/entries. I don't think it's fair to them (and their readers) to lock everything down. It's also not fair to the users outside off LJ who want to be informed about what's going on with 6A/LJ.
There are a lot of great posts (like the original hitlist of the WfI) that should stay public because they deal with interests of public opinion. Please reconsider the flocking thing.

I agree. Couldn't we just have the comm's default settings be to only allow posts and comments from members? That would keep the trolling down while at the same time allowing this community to continue to be a resource for LJ users (and former LJ users -- do we really want to make it so people unfairly kicked off LJ in the future can't see anything in this community?) who want to follow current events relating to fandom deletions.
I would've said, a day or so ago, that allowing non-members to post comments so that LJ representatives could respond to us here might be worthwhile, but anildash's recent comments achieved rather the opposite of making me believe any good might come of dialogue with LJ staff in this venue.

"Couldn't we just have the comm's default settings be to only allow posts and comments from members? "
I think this is a much better idea than f-locking the community. If we make all of our entries private, then what's the point of the community? Shouldn't we be persuading others to our viewpoint or, at the very least, allowing other lj users to see the facts and data we have collected? Just my $0.02.
Re: no flocking, pleasebuggeryAugust 21 2007, 19:02:12 UTC
Could it have been because the users making the posts in question had (indavertently or otherwise) set their posts to allow all comments?
For that matter, were you expecting a community-wide change in comment settings to apply retroactively to posts already made? Because I don't think it works that way. If the only problem is people not being aware they should/can set their posts not to allow comments from non-members, then the solution is to increase awareness, not hide all our content.
People who have already made posts here would have to go back and change the comment settings on their existing posts... but that's merely annoying, not insurmountable.
Either way -- weird as it seems to suggest this -- you could open a support request if comments which really shouldn't be allowed are being allowed.

That's odd. I've been to communities before with public posts that I could not comment to because I wasn't a member. Perhaps you didn't change the correct setting?
I also think limiting commenting is a much better option than f-locking all posts.

I'm sorry to hear that -- most of the people I'd talked to in that thread (and in conversations spawned by it) said they thought the dialogue was valuable. I'd like to understand more about why you think it's a bad thing, if you don't mind explaining.

I agree with this. I have linked to innocence_jihad posts and would be doing so in the future too. I also think by locking the posts the trolls get what they want since it's a clear sign they had an impact on people.

I agree, I'm not a LJ user, I had considered being one up until this business started again but I went for IJ because of it.
I check this comm at least once a day, to see if there's any improvement in the situation.
I will start a LJ if this comm goes to f-locked, but mainly to join this comm and keep up to date with the news, my main and only proper journal will be IJ.
