Last night I went to my first Botellon in Spain. Botellon is basically when students in the university go buy alcohol and drink it straight from the bottles (botellas) in the park, it is a country-wide cultural tradition. It is more or less illegal but that never matters here in Spain. It was really fun. I was really happy about this because now I actually have Spanish friends. This came about because every Wednesday there is an ´intercambio´ in one of the bars here. I went last week and talked to some people, but this Wednesday I had some really good conversations with some cool Spanish girls and a couple boys. I also felt particularly awesome about this because I saw the Kansas bitches there, and they were boring and seemingly unable to speak much in Spanish, which is lame so I felt superior. Anyway, so Angela, Sara, and I were at the intercambio and we talked a lot to some of the girls and then they invited us to go out last night, Thursday. We ended up going to the Alameda to drink. It was fun! I peed in a bush. We talked a lot about bushes and Bush, because I kept talking about how I needed to pee in a bush, and Sara and I taught them the phrase ´Keep Bush out of my bush!´ I wish I had talked to other students that I didn´t know, because I definitely felt in the mood to, but then the Polish girl wanted to go to the discoteque at friggin 2 am. WAY TOO EARLY. But since we are nice people we accompanied her and went to Guayaba, which was fun. Eugenia, one girl I really really like, was trying to teach me how to dance in a particular way to one particular song. I was terrible. I wish I knew these Spanish pop songs better because even though I like dancing to the music, I can tell that all the other Spaniards are having 1000 times more fun than me because they know the words and are familiar with it. It´s like dancing to Le Tigre with a Spanish person--soo awesome that they literally don´t understand. It is too bad that they all live in Pontevedra or something because they always go back to their towns on the weekends.
I might go back to Reed but I kind of don´t feel like it. There is no particular reason that Reed appeals to me right now. Renn Fayre is okay but not as cool as living in a foreign country. I miss my Portland friends, but I also have ways to see them otherwise.
Ideally, I would like to go to Korea for the summer and see how things work out there. If I can handle it enough, on my own, perhaps I will stay until November or December. I was looking at some sites for employment in Spain, and I found Instituto Hemingway, which offers a lot of really good programs for foreigners to work in Spain, in positions such as an au pair or teaching English. I definitely do not want to be a baby sitter and I am tired of teaching English, but they also have a program in the hospitality sector--I would work in a 4 or 5 star hotel doing something like catering or receptionist work. Or maybe even a bartender! I really like this idea because I do think that hotel management is a great career, and it would be nice to get some experience in it. The best part about this is that the cost for 5-6 months is only 800 euros and it includes accommodation (in the hotel!!!) AND 3 meals a day. And on top of that, I would get paid 2 to 300 euros per month. And I don´t even have to speak Spanish to do this, which means that since my Spanish is just sooo amazing, I would probably get paid better! Or be eligible for a better position. Oh yeah and this would be in MADRID or BARCELONA. This idea excites me a lot, as you can tell. The fee for enrolling would not be a big deal for me especially if I work a lot in Korea before, and then the 2 to 300 euros a month would be good for everyday expenses.
I don´t know how long I´d want to do that for. To be honest, I would love to make it back to the US for Renn Fayre 08, but we´ll see how it all works out.
I feel uneasy about putting my educational career on hold, but I really do have my whole life in front of me and when I graduate, I don´t know if I´ll be in the same position I am in now to travel and do this kind of stuff.
Also, who is thinking about being in Europe for fall 07 or spring 08?
Besos.
