Canon:: Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Character: Exiled Former Fire Prince Zuko.
Timeline: Pulled directly after his confrontation with Fire Lord Ozai, during the Day of Black Sun.

Personality: Zuko, at first glance, is a fierce individual. He is one of the most powerful firebenders in the history of the Fire Nation, due to his harsh inner discipline and self-training. What Zuko wants, Zuko usually gets, but not through anyone else’s hands but his own. He is reluctant to rely on others for what he wants because he’s always faced disappointment when relying on other people. As a result of Fire Lord Ozai’s banishment, Zuko had to rely only on himself (and his Uncle Iroh) to pull through, which causes him to come off as very cold and standoffish.

Despite these hardships, Zuko is definitely not all that he appears to be. The prince is an extraordinarily conflicted individual, constantly battling between the good and evil inside his heart. Through his own inner determination and with the help of his most loyal supporter, General Iroh, Zuko manages to conquer the evil within his heart and wind up on top to help the Avatar maintain balance within the world. He is, deep down, a good-hearted individual who wants to right what he has wronged. Once Zuko has realized that he doesn’t need his father’s approval in order to restore his honor, he transforms into a fierce ally and a loyal warrior for the Avatar. You will never find a better warrior than Zuko to fight on your side…but you might have to be a little patient with his impatience and his emotional outbursts along the way.

Background: Zuko is the eldest child in the royal family of the Fire Nation. His father is Fire Lord Ozai, one of the most powerful firebenders in the history of the fire nation. His sister, Princess Azula, is a firebending prodigy who is determined to excel as quickly as possible towards the top of the royal family. His mother, Ursa, is depicted as a kind and loving woman who wants what is best for her family. On the service, the royal family appears fierce, determined, and loyal to their cause of expanding the Fire Nation’s borders into other countries without pause. Underneath the surface, however, Zuko’s family is far from united.

It is unknown when, exactly, Zuko’s mother vanished from his family, but it is known that Zuko was his mother’s favorite child. Zuko, often looked down upon by his father as weak and worthless, was a “mama’s boy” who was kind, gentle, and loving. Through events that are largely unknown, Ursa (according to Fire Lord Ozai) committed an act of treason and was promptly banished from the nation. This act was done to save Zuko from an unimaginable fate, but also put her husband on the throne as Fire Lord, beating his elder brother, Iroh, to the throne. Zuko was told his mother was dead and, for many years, toiled on in his firebending training without her, morphing from a kind and loving boy to a determined disciplined teenager almost overnight. Without his mother’s kind and loving encouragement, Zuko had only his father’s constant disapproval and his sister’s cold and unloving manner to grow up with. Only his uncle, Iroh, supported him fully through this difficult time.

When Zuko was 13, he spoke out of turn in front of his father. Ozai took this as a grave sign of disrespect and challenged Zuko to an Agny-Kai, which is a ceremonial dance of power and firebending. Ozai took the ceremony to the next level and challenged the inexperienced Zuko to an actual battle to the death. Ozai, as a “kindness”, only disfigured Zuko’s face and allowed him to live, but banished him to exile. Zuko, half of his face scarred, was only allowed to return to his home after he had done something to restore his honor. This is a crucial point in Zuko’s history in understanding his character’s motivation - Zuko is constantly driven to restore his honor in order for his father to accept him with open arms and (he thinks) love. Zuko, with a fleet of soldiers and his uncle Iroh, set out to do the only thing he could think of to force Ozai to accept him back: hunt down the long-lost Avatar and turn him into the Fire Nation to be killed and protect their nation expansion mission.

Zuko, over three years, hunts Aang (the Avatar) relentlessly, but through much failure and not very much success. He kidnaps Aang during the siege of the Northern Water Tribe only to lose him in the snow later on when Katara and Sokka attack him and freeze him in a snowdrift. Aang slips through his fingers at the end of the siege once more when Zuko must stop Admiral Zhao, one of his father’s most loyal soldiers, from escape due to an earlier plot to kill the exiled prince. Zuko manages to defeat Admiral Zhao (for the second time in the series), but is shown to have a moment of forgiveness when he tries to rescue Zhao from the tidal wave that Aang creates in his Avatar State. Zhao refuses the help and he slips into the abyss. Zuko escapes the Northern Water Tribe with his most loyal companion, his uncle Iroh, and sets off to continue his search for the Avatar elsewhere.

The next six months of his journey results in little progress in his search for the Avatar, but much progress in the development of his character. Zuko begins to slowly understand that his search for the Avatar will not cause his father to love him and instead begins to live as a fugitive rather than an exiled prince. For the first time, Zuko encounters people who have suffered negatively at the hands of the Fire Nation and he begins to see his people and his role in the process of the war. His mentality towards his mission begins to change as he and his uncle travel to the earth kingdom stronghold of Ba Sing Se. He begins to understand that his constant drive for the Avatar is consuming his life and, at one point, helps Aang recover his sky bison Appa despite Zuko’s vow to turn the Avatar into his father as soon as he sees him. At the end of the second season, Zuko must confront both the good and evil battling within his heart. On one hand, Zuko has grown to understand life outside of the Fire Nation and has grown stronger and into a better person underneath the hand of his uncle Iroh. On the other hand, Zuko still desperately wants to win his father’s trust and love back. He decides to go with his sister, Azula, betraying his uncle Iroh and the Avatar’s trust in order to turn the Avatar into the Fire Nation.

After the betrayal of his uncle, Zuko’s inner confliction is put to the ultimate test. He loathes what he has done to his uncle, but feels like he needs to uphold his responsibilities as the prince of the Fire Nation. He eventually decides that he cannot be someone he’s not, which is an obedient prince who doesn’t voice his own opinion. At the resistance’s invasion of his home palace, Zuko makes the decision to finally confront his father to a duel. He manages to deflect his father’s lightning (something he couldn’t do at the age of thirteen) and escape the kingdom in order to help the Avatar.

Upon being pulled into Adstring, Zuko is getting into his war balloon to follow Aang, Appa, and the crew of survivors from the invasion of the Fire Nation to help him overthrow the Fire Nation and maintain balance with the world.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Zuko is a powerful firebender. He has the ability to conjure fire at will by using his body as a funnel to channel his “inner fire” towards various opponents and objects. He also has the ability to redirect lightning that is shot at him (though only three firebenders in the series are known to shoot lightning, and Zuko is not one of them).

On top of being a great firebender, Zuko is also an excellent martial artist (specifically, kung fu). He can defend himself and fight off an enemy without his firebending easily in a pinch. He is fast and agile, through many years of self-discipline in order to keep himself in top physical shape.

He is also adept with the broadsword, preferring a dual-sword approach, when he isn’t able to firebend for whatever reason.
