Christmas Knitting

I took a break this Christmas! I decided not to try and rush knitted presents for the niblings (making it the first time in all four years Abby did not get a hand knitted present from me), supposedly in order to concentrate on the busting of the stash. What ended up happening is I ended up making presents for the roommates instead.

Becca’s hat is based on the hat worn by Mary Lennox in the 1993 movie of The Secret Garden, and is from a pattern by Talena, knitted with KnitPicks Brava.

It took about two days, I think, knitted mostly on a roadtrip across the country, and it’s massive! I had to buy new yarn for the pompom.  That pompom actually came out terribly. I even bought pompom makers at the end of the roadtrip, then promptly lost the instructions. No big, I thought: Pompoms can’t be that hard to make. Turns out no. And it’s no as if I’ve never made them before. Meh. Guess I can try again.

Ana’s mittens are made of the ridiculously soft KnitPicks reverie, in a colorway called “hawk.” Accusations that I picked the yarn based on Ana’s roleplaying character from the Animorphs series are entirely correct. The pattern is Lauren Perruzza’s Manly-Man Man Mittens and it was simple and fun to knit up. My absolute favorite part is the invisible seam on the hand toppers, caused by running yarn across the wrong side and using that to pick up stitches through the fabric. I think they came out great.

And I just asked Ana what he thinks, and he says “fine,” so I guess that’s good too.
