Although for what it's worth, between the corpse stacking and the insistence on having his troops restab all the corpses just to be sure they're dead, Leonidas has the world's most ass-kicking form of OCD. If the Spartans really wanted to keep him from going to war, they probably just could have sent some guy to stand outside the gates of the city and ask Leonidas if he'd forgotten to unplug his iron every time he tried to leave.
