[FST: Dungeons and Dragons]

Sep 17, 2006 12:47

Does Dungeons and Dragons really need an introduction? Certainly we never really got one, beyond the briefly dramatised exposition during the title credits of each episode. Six normal kids share a car in the Dungeons and Dragons ride at a themepark, only to discover things going terribly wrong, and they're transported into a dangerous fantasy world with no way home. A mysterious being known only as "Dungeon Master" equips each of the children with a magical weapon, and lets them fight a dragon and a evil horned guy on their own. Then he continues to turn up and give them irritatingly vague hints about how they can get home. Sadly, the series was cancelled before they ever did make it home

Introduction
1. Elfland (Lyrics and artist information unavailable online. If you have any idea where this came from, let me know.)

THE HEROES

Hank: The Ranger
2. Erich Wolfgang Korngold - March of the Merry Men [Instrumental]

3. Tonic - Head On Straight : [Lyrics]
Appointed the leader of the small group of adventurers, Hank possesses a magic bow that fires arrows of golden light. He is noble, moral, upright and loyal, and is terrified that his leadership will get his friends killed.

Bobby - The Barbarian
4. Basil Poledouris - Conan the Barbarian [Instrumental]
5. James Taylor - You've Got a Friend [Lyrics]
The youngest and smallest member of the group, Bobby makes up for his small stature with his demolition ball of a club that manages to favour the direct approach. Bobby is straight forward, simple and hugely to his friends, especially his older sister Sheila and his baby unicorn Uni.

Presto - The Magician
6. Paul Dukas - The Sorcerer's Apprentice [Instrumental]
7. The Arrogant Worms - Great to be a Nerd [Lyrics]
Presto is the outsider of the group. The next youngest after Bobby, he doesn't have the familial link the Barbarian has. He represents the most underused potential: in theory the smartest of them, it's mostly book smarts and not as useful in survival situations as Diana's quick thinking. His object - a magic hat, is also theoretically the most powerful, as out of it he can produce anything. However, he never quite gets to grips with how to use it, and most of what he produces is utterly useless to them.

Sheila - The Thief
8. Joe Hisaishi - Sen's Courage [Instrumental]
9. Kate Bush - How to Be Invisible [Lyrics]
Sheila is the maternal figure of the group, and the worrywart. Unlike Eric's pessimism, however, hers stems from how deeply she cares for every single one of the group, particularly her brother Bobby, and Hank, for whom she appears to have romantic feelings. Her fondness of the cautious approach to any problem is aided by her invisibility cape.

Eric - The Cavalier
10. Voltaire - Crusade (Lyrics unavailable online)
11. Reel Big Fish - Somebody Hates Me [Lyrics]
Eric's the spoiled rich kid of the group. Used to the best from his upbringing by multi-millionaire parents, he feels so much more out of his depth than the others, which makes him sarcastic, short tempered and irritable. His weapon is a shield behind which he can protect all six of the team.

Diana - The Acrobat
12. Charles Fox - Wonder Woman
13. The Pretenders - I'll Stand by You [Lyrics]
Ah, Diana. Back when blatant tokenicity was still considered a good thing. The strong black female character with a magic stick, Diana is the brawn and the cheer of the group. Always optimistic, supportive, and relatively modest despite her superior strength and agility, Diana plays an important role in keeping everyone together. She's a contrast to Eric, with whom she argues a lot, but there's always this hint that there's something more between them. She's also my favourite character, and not just because she wears a fur bikini.

Uni
14. Nobuo Uematsu - Moogles' Theme [Instrumental]
With the exception of perhaps Snarf, Uni is the single most irritatingly cute and sickly cartoon character in the world. The whole thing would be so much better if she wasn't in it.

Interlude:
15. Cowboy Mouth  - Home (Lyrics unavailable online)

THE BAD GUYS

Dungeon Master
16. Metallica - Master of Puppets [Lyrics] ]
I don't care what people say: Dungeon Master is an evil so-and-so. He's all powerful, never gives the kids a straight answer, and like the real life DMs he represents, seems to put them in threatening situations deliberately. Oh, and in the script for the unfilmed final episode, he places a wager with Venger over the fates of the children. It's all very Book of Job.

Venger
17. Alice Cooper - Triggerman [Lyrics]
He's the official bad one. He wants the children's weapons and he'll do anything to get them. As long as that anything is easy to overcome and escape from within the space of half an hour.

Shadow Demon
18. Dave Greenslade - The One Horseman and Three Pedestrians of the Apocalypse [Instrumental]
Venger's right hand man. Ghost. Demon Thing.

Tiamat
19. Dream Evil - In Flames You Burn [Lyrics]
The many headed dragon queen.

The End
20. Queen - Friends will be Friends will be Friends [Lyrics]

Bonus Track
21. Dungeons and Dragons TV Theme
