In Memoriam

So, the Pope died last night.

I'm not crying over him, for several reasons.

1) It's not really in my nature to do so.

2) I'm not exactly a strict Catholic, and I've never been a fanatical devotee of the Pope. It's weird, though...I never gave too much thought to him, but I guess I sort of took it for granted that he was always just there and always would be. Like an article said, because of his long reign, he's the only Pope that us younger Catholics have known.

3) It was God's will. I decided a couple of days ago that I wasn't going to pray for the Pope to recover, nor for him to die. Instead, I should just pray to God to take care of him and do His will, because He knows what's best. If God thought it was time for the Pope to die, he would die. If not, he wouldn't. I trusted God to do what was best for His faithful servant. And what's more, I'm sure the Pope felt exactly the same way.

4) In honor of the Pope, I watched parts of Joseph: King of Dreams last night as he was dying in order to listen to two of the songs. The first was You Know Better Than I, which basically says the same thing as I did above:

You know better than I
You know the way
I've let go the need to know why
I'll take what answers you supply
'Cause you know better than I

The second was this one, my favorite:

You've got to give a little more than you take
You've got to leave a little more than what's here
You may be prideful of the strides you will take,
But keep one thing clear:
You're just a player in a much bigger plan
And still you've got to give it all that you can
The very measure of your soul is at stake
You've got to give a little more than you take.

And that one cheered me up too, because the Pope did exactly that. The measure of his soul was at stake, and he gave it all that he could. I'm sure that he was the best Pope that he could possibly be, and that he gave much more than he took, giving people inspiration and hope. He died having done exactly what God had asked of him, and I think that for anyone, and especially for the Pope, that would be a great comfort.
