I will, of course, attempt to teach Lilo and all of my students the realities of life. But in this place, my teaching can only do so much.

You don't have to. I am a teacher, and it's my job to make sure my students know everything they need to know.

Yes, but...typically that's...something the public schools on Kaua'i leave up to families for explaining.

Lilo is lucky. She has you, a member of her real family, to look after her here. Most of my students do not. For those who have guardians, these people are sometimes older friends, or others who have decided to take on their care. Not their real family. Others still have no guardian at all.

Leaving this up to the families is not a luxury I have here.
