Glee Rewatch 2014: City of Angels

Dec 08, 2014 14:36

Things that happened:
  • Nationals has (fucking finally) arrived.
  • Will has decided that the only person who can lead the New Directions is Sam. Putting so much pressure on Sam is obviously a bad idea, frankly.
  • Anyway, they're off to LA with Carole and Burt as their chaperones. They meet Jean Baptiste, who is the leader of Throat Explosion and is very weird. Carole isn't doing well surrounded by all of Finn's friends.
  • Mercedes has reappeared and scored her own record deal. Yay, Mercedes! She also gives some advice to Marley to keep writing her songs, even when she doesn't get anywhere.
  • They do a tribute to Finn for Nationals by doing all of his favourite songs. They come second. Unfortunately, that means that the club is going to be disbanded.
Sporadic thoughts while watching:
1. Sam is the new Finn and Finn is the new Will, and therefore, as a straight white guy, he is Will's only viable option to lead the New Direction's to success. Despite the fact that Blaine has been doing a fine job.
2. "No one had a Finn." That's because Finn was kind of an unexceptional performer. (Also, what's with talking about Kurt like he was some great testament of the New Direction's talent? Will gave him like, three featured lines in all of their competitions. He didn't appreciate his skill until he was long gone.)
3. I mean, just... since when has Sam been good leadership material? Legitimately, when has he taken on that position and actually succeeded at it?
4. Somehow, city-themed songs are always terrible.
5. Oh, heeeeey Mercedes! Looking glamorous.
6. Skylar Astin! Most excellent.
7. Will has placed Sam as the leader, but Jean Baptiste goes straight for Blaine. They know who's actually been leading the club for the past year.
8. "Byeeeeeee."
9. I kind of forgot that the newbies were actual characters with storylines and now I feel vaguely guilty.
10. "Existentially yes, Blaine, perhaps we are all alone." I love him.
11. Jean Baptiste really isn't a bad guy - he has honest respect for the Finn situation.
12. Oh, Carole.
13. So, the whole star thing with Mercedes - is that imitating some kind of reality show, or?
14. "And if you try to walk, people will look at you weird."
15. So, um, what is exactly so fucking exciting about Prancercise, Blaine? (...Do you think this is a new exercise thing he and Kurt do together? Because.)
16. Mr Roboto / Counting Stars is really weird, but actually really works?
17. Also, they wear the same colours that Vocal Adrenaline did.
18. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is beautiful.
19. And seeing his face again after so long is squeezing my heart into pieces.
20. I miss him.
21. And the drumsticks are a beautifully subtle tribute.
22. Ah, Mercedes you are wonderful.
23. Coming second is a very realistic touch. Although the way they're so torn up about it is a little dramatic,
24. "You didn't lose, William. Game's just over."
25. I like how they managed to push New York into the episode at the very last minute. 30 seconds of Kurt and Rachel and Santana, yaaaaay!
