Yuui's hands on his shoulders are calloused like all guitarist's, and Fai moans quietly as he takes his brother's mouth. Their liaisons are all like this, smokey and secret in dimly-lit corners of the tour bus, and it doesn't get more remote than the storage space for their instruments at two o'clock in the morning.

"Fai," Yuui says helplessly into his mouth, and Fai deepens the kiss as he works his brother's top up, parting only to pull it all the way off. He hasn't had Yuui for nine days, what with the other members of their band being so close all the time. Kurogane keeps eyeing him, and he worries the drummer suspects something, but he can't give Yuui up.

"Wanted you all day," he whispers, his voice still rough and hoarse from the gig, and Yuui smiles and wraps his legs around Fai's hips as he works their belts open and undoes their pants, freeing their matching erections, Yuui first and then his as always. It's been that way since they ran away from home together, fourteen and armed only with their father's Fender Strat and Fai's voice. Yuui is his and he is Yuui's and nobody can ruin that, not even Kurogane.

"Sing for me," Yuui murmurs back, and Fai screws his eyes shut and kisses his twin as he curves his hand around their cocks, and his heart beats faster than it did when he stood before the crowd dressed in leather with his stage makeup on, microphone in hand and the intro blaring through the amps. Being with Yuui always makes him feel like he's flying.

It's not ideal, but it's theirs.

01;

Yuui is the elder twin, but Fai has always been more vivacious. Their mother wouldn't tell them for a long time which one was born first because she wanted to keep them guessing, but when she found out that the kind of cancer she had wasn't the kind that responded to chemotherapy, she gave up that secret to the pair of them. Yuui was born sixteen minutes and seven seconds before Fai.

02;

They were thirteen when she died and they both missed her terribly, but Fai was the one who cried for her most. The night of the funeral Fai's choked little sobs woke Yuui up, so he slipped out of his bed and climbed into his brother's on the other side of the room and they held each other tightly, trying to give each other that much. Looking back, Yuui thinks that's when it started between them.

03;

Kurogane was conceived through IVF and was an only child. His mother was a kindergarten teacher and his father was a respected studio drummer working for a particular record label in Tokyo.

04;

Yuui taught himself how to play guitar at first. Their stepfather wasn't really interested in their father's collection of instruments, so one day he just sneaked into the old room where everything was stored and poked through the items until the smooth curve of a guitar case caught his eye. He didn't know anything about music or instruments and he didn't know quite what he was looking at when he opened the case, but the shape and feel of the old Fender Strat in his hands made him smile.

05;

Fai's mother used to sing with him, and he was in the school choir. He kept it up for a while after she died but eventually lost interest. He had too many other things going on. While Yuui was practising with the guitar Fai would lounge around the spare room watching him and humming tunes for him to follow.

06;

Kurogane got his first drum kit as a gift when he was six years old. His parents soundproofed their bedroom less than a week later.

07;

Fai's favourite musician is David Bowie. His mother had an old record player and she used to play his music on vinyl, and he grew up watching music videos of Bowie's performances and trying to copy him.

08;

Yuui admires all the famous guitarists you'd expect - Jimmy Page, John Frusciante, Jimi Hendrix and so on - but his favourite musician is Damon Albarn. He thinks Albarn's style is as smart as it is strange and that the Gorillaz are a clever invention.

09;

Kurogane's favourite musician is his dad, thanks.

10;

It wasn't any one thing that made them run away. Their stepfather was never really cruel to them so much as... forgot they were there. There was no one event that pushed them to leave home; Fai just woke up one day and decided he'd had enough and that they should fend for themselves. They were fourteen. Yuui took the guitar.

11;

They were smart kids, but that doesn't help you on the street. The guitar was stolen within a week of them leaving home. They learned to pickpocket to survive, and they got very good at it. One day they were in some cul-de-sac council estate in the south east of London, all high rises and drug trafficking and mass unemployment, when they decided to pickpocket some tourists fresh of the train; couple of Japanese guys not much older than themselves. No sooner had Fai slid his hand into their bag than he found his wrist caught in a grip like a vice and a glaring pair of lilac eyes fixed on his face. Instead of beating him up or dragging him down to the police station, the tourists bought him and Yuui breakfast.

12;

Kurogane's family moved to America when he was nine, and he hated it there. His English wasn't very good and the other kids at his school seemed to think he was Chinese and if they didn't, they kept talking about Pearl Harbour. Eventually he got frustrated enough that he started punching them in the face.

13;

The Japanese twins were named Subaru and Kamui, and they were on the run from a mysterious person who wanted Subaru for whatever reason. Kamui was trying to protect him, which Fai empathised with. They were very well-travelled and smart and streetwise, which impressed Fai and Yuui, and when they decided to stick around in the area they let the twins stay with them.

14;

They ended up squatting a flat in a high rise that used to belong a drug dealer currently doing time in Belmarsh. The police raid on his empty home had left it brutalised but liveable. Subaru got the lights on and Kamui went and stole bedsheets from a washing line on someone else's balcony. Yuui and Fai got a mattress on the floor as their bed, while Subaru and Kamui got the real thing. They rigged up a sheet between them to give both sets of twins a bit of privacy.

15;

Kurogane's parents signed him up for martial arts classes to try helping with his anger issues. Every day after school he went to a different club and studied a different discipline, like Monday was Akido night and Tuesday was judo. He was really good at it, but it didn't help because he just used his new skills to put his classmates down harder.

16;

Subaru's expertise was in burglary. He could break into almost any house, and he took Yuui under his wing and showed him how to do it too, starting with the simple two-man raid where Yuui would keep a look out and he'd jump over a garden wall and help himself to whatever he could find in the shed or the garage all the way up to cat burglary and theft of valuables from a house. One day they were going through a place when Yuui spotted a guitar on the wall, and even though it was too hefty to comfortably manage Subaru saw the longing on his face and they stole that, too.

17;

Kamui was a carjacker. He taught Fai how to do that, too, as well as how to pick which cars to steal and how to find someone willing to take them. When he smiled after Fai hotwired his first car and the engine sputtered to life Fai was the proudest he'd ever been. They might not have parents, but he felt like it was okay.

18;

After Kurogane was kicked out of his first school his parents began to try therapy with him. He'd already been seeing an anger management therapist but he wasn't helping, so they sent him to a new one who was really different from the rest. While he was sitting in the waiting room next to his mom under the watchful eye of the secretary Kurogane spotted a little Japanese girl playing on the floor; she looked up and caught his gaze and brought him one of her dolls and greeted him in Japanese. Her name turned out to be Tomoyo and she was the therapist's daughter.

19;

Fai was never quite sure if Kamui and Subaru were just twins or more, but when Kamui caught him and Yuui having sex he didn't say anything. Instead he let the partitioning sheet hanging from the middle of the room fall back and went away, and Fai worried anxiously about what they were going to do. Instead of yelling and eviction however, it was Subaru who sat them down and awkwardly tried to explain about safe sex. It was one of the most embarrassing moments in his and Yuui's life ever.

20;

Yuui played his new guitar often in their flat, and Fai frequently sang along. Subaru could be persuaded to join in providing the rhythm by tapping bowls and other things in place of drums. Kamui refused to be a part of their crazy, but Fai would catch him humming tunes they'd played when he and Fai were out stealing cars.

21;

When Kurogane was fifteen he came across one of his classmates spiking drinks with rohypnol at a party, with the clear intention of getting girls wasted and date raping them. He put the guy in hospital, but ended up being arrested and charged with assault and battery. He did a stint in a young offender's institution and emerged from it harrowed and determined not to be one of the violent head cases from there.

22;

One day Kamui and Subaru vanished. They left a note behind taped to Yuui's guitar stating that the person they were running from had caught up with them and wishing the twins luck. He never knew where they went, but Fai never held it against them because he'd kind of expected it. To this day he hopes they're alive and they're okay, and that Subaru's mystery pursuer hasn't caught up with them.

23;

About a day after Kamui and Subaru left, the police raided the flat; Yuui and Fai co-operated with them as best they could and Fai still ended up black and blue from 'accidents' occurred while they threw them in the van and hustled them back to the station. They were interviewed together by a shouty officer and a calmer constable who kept asking questions about a pair of Japanese twins, but neither Fai nor Yuui knew anything about where they might be and said as much. There was a Japanese men with the police who sat in on the interview and who creeped them both out; he had one glassy eye and flashing spectacles and an eerie smile. When the blockheads of the Met finally realised neither of the twins knew anything they released the kids into the care of the local council's social services, who promptly placed them into foster care. They were a few months short of sixteen.

24;

Tomoyo was the one who recommended Kurogane take up drumming again. She was six years younger than him and he still saw her mother every week for anger management therapy, but Tomoyo worked better than Sonami and even their parents knew it. When he took hold of the drumsticks for the first time since he'd come to America, he felt a whole lot better, and he ended up playing until one o'clock in the morning when his mother wearily came into his room and sent him off to bed. After that, things quietened down for him a lot.

25;

Foster care was rough on both of the twins. They were split up and didn't cope well. Yuui was allowed to keep his guitar and he shut himself away in his bedroom, and he played and played and played and refused to interact with his foster family; Fai went out drinking and let other people use him just so he would be warm. He learned how to flirt and manipulate and how to pretend everything was okay when it wasn't.

26;

Yuui's music teacher recognised Yuui's talent about the same time Fai's school was flunking him. When Fai heard of Yuui's recognition & encouragement he deliberately sought out the head of his school choir after school and outed his own gift, and though the choirmaster didn't think he was the right fit for a choir he recognised Fai's potential and arranged for a professional voice coach to come in and work with him. After eight months apart Yuui and Fai saw each other again for the first time at the BBC's broadcasting house in Central London to appear on a program about young musicians. There were tears.

27;

Kurogane and Tomoyo joined their first band together. Their band mates were a couple of helpless idiots who weren't worthy of Tomoyo's voice and his drums, although they were still popular enough at his high school and the local town. A record label scout came to watch them perform, although Kurogane suspected that was less because of any fame or skill on their part and more because of who his father was.

28;

Yuui and Fai were signed together to a small Northeast London label which filled in session musicians for whatever other slots they needed. Their first album, which the label hired a songwriter for, did okay - not great but enough to justify making a second. Fai insisted on writing that one, and it charted.

29;

After their second album went out they began sleeping together again, for the first time since that grotty flat on the council estate near Woolwich Arsenal. They'd shared a bed since they came out of foster care and lived with each other, but they hadn't touched, and it was Yuui who initiated the first cautious contact. Fai reciprocated with a whole lot of energy, and after that the distance that had settled between them following their separation was destroyed and they were close and whole again, and both happier than they'd ever been before.

30;

Kurogane acquired a manager around the time he graduated without even meaning to. She was some annoying witch who had known his father way back, and when he moved to Los Angeles to join his label's line-up of studio drummers she more or less attached herself to him. She kept talking about him being part of an actual band, which annoyed him because he was happy enough with his steady paying job and besides, the only person he thought he could work with was Tomoyo, and Tomoyo was making her name by singing breathless, achingly sweet and sad songs about unrequited love accompanied by piano or acoustic guitar, she didn't need him.

31;

Yuui and Fai's album sales were so good their label wanted to send them overseas to crack the big American market. They were signed to a subsidiary of an international label and shipped over to New York. Fai was ridiculously excited; Yuui didn't really want to go and privately thought they were going to fail like most British musicians do in the USA.

32;

Fai turned out not to like NYC. Yuui fell in love with it.

33;

Kurogane's manager was the one who got them together. She showed him a glossy image of Fai and Yuui and said they were looking for a drummer, and Kurogane stupidly agreed to record a track with them. Yuui was nice enough, but Fai was annoying as hell. Kurogane had to admit though that musically they didn't completely suck.

34;

Their first single was a ridiculous success, hitting number one stupidly fast and receiving massive amounts of air time. Suddenly Fai and Yuui were the darling of the media, appearing on all sorts of tv shows and radio programs, and it was weird. Fai did the majority of the publicity circuit, since he was more confident than Yuui.

35;

Yuui is happy they're doing okay and grateful for the opportunity, but privately he wishes he had more of Fai.

36;

Kurogane isn't jealous of their fame because they're IDIOTS. Well, Yuui's okay. He was glad to see the back of them which of course is when his manager materialises and informs him that the label are setting a band up around the exotic blond idiots while everyone's still talking about them and Fai specifically requested he join. Kurogane says no, she says too bad.

37;

He doesn't wonder what the twins do together in their hotel room. He's not sure he wants to know. Truth be told, he mostly suspects what's going on anyway, and the thought makes him uncomfortable and embarrassed and oddly turned on. Fucking twins, man.
