She did think he could -- or at least she hoped he could. :) What she meant is that it would be impossible to close it with physical strength alone.

Pretty much magnify all of my flailing at the snippety bits of this over MSN by about... oh, A MILLION.

Dear lordy. Kuro-captain, you are totally not masking your need to make sure that skinny blonde travelling with you is safe via your grumpiness, and I was pretty much on the edge of my seat the moment they were attacked.

Kuro-gunner. Syaoran channelling his inner Wash. Sakura and Yuui in the broken segment of the hull and Yuui being incredibly brave/stupid/psychically awesome.

Fortunately, unlike Joss Whedon, we don't feel particularly compelled to randomly kill off our pilots in an attempt to shock tears from the readers. >.>

And yes, Kurogane's just mad cos he's scared for Yuui. He's going to have some trouble pretending indifference after this... ;)
