old 97's and drive-by truckers at ram's head live 3.17.13

Really great show. The Old 97's were really bouncy and upbeat and fun; not very chatty, though, not much banter. Just a fast, good set. Rhett was adorable as ever, though his hair situation is getting a little out of control.

The Truckers were also amazing as usual. Patterson's song choice was kind of gloomy and dark; before "The Living Bubba" he told a story about ANOTHER close friend of theirs who died recently. That's like the third good friend they've lost in the last few months, plus whatever went down with John Neff leaving** so no wonder the guy's a little down. He looked good, though, and they all sounded good. (I cannot say Cooley looked good because speaking of hair situations that are out of control. >:( )

They did a full cover of "State Trooper" instead of the short version they usually throw in the encore. Hearts in my eyes. And Cooley played "When The Pin Hits The Shell," which I haven't heard in ages, yay. A lot of Cooley's songs have been re-arranged for Jay Gonzalez on piano instead of a third guitar. I'm still getting used to that. They're lovely this way, but I learned them the other way, so it's weird.

But really, the point is, &band;

** There was an article about the band recently, which they linked on Facebook, that started off talking about how the band almost broke up last year (!!!), but since Shonna and John left everything is okay now. Given that Shonna left before last year, and how John quit by e-mail the day before their NYE shows, I'm guessing that description was a wee bit disingenuous and, well, John was the whole problem. >:( NEFF. >:(
