The only reason I own a Springsteen album at all, because try as I might I just can't care (except for Thunder Road and that's because my ex made me care) about his songs (not a lyrics person at all, have I mentioned that RECENTLY??) is that I love Brucemas to death.

If his songs sounded, ever, at all, even a little bit, as interesting to me as your analysis of his songs does, I would totally convert.

:) I'm glad you enjoy the posts! I wish you could enjoy the songs too, but I have managed to more or less accept that they're just not for everybody.

Heh, after the last two Brucemases I went out and d/l'd a bunch of Bruce, thinking that now, with these explanations, I would like the songs better. But here's the thing, and the compliment I am meaning to pay even if I am doing it backwards --

I did that two years in a row, because the way you write about Bruce is compelling enough that I thought it might work a second time, having failed the first. :)

Much like my efforts to 'get' the West Wing, I imagine :)

Well, I just mean in the sense that the reason I'm still watching it is that a lot of people whose opinions I respect like it.

Right -- that's why I periodically try Springsteen AGAIN. People whose judgment and taste I value keep finding value, so perhaps I should try again . . .

When Josh on ifanboy did that post about the influences you can see in his writing, I composed this mental thing about Bruce, which has nothing to do with the music (though I like the music, I wouldn't if I didn't) but about his narrators, who are always trying to explain who they are and hide who they are at the same time, who talk about how they don't understand what's wrong with their lives at the same time they reveal what's wrong with their lives.

Which reminds me, 'Night, if you feel like Bruce-mas-ing "One Step Up" or "Straight Time" at any point, you would have an audience of me. (You would also have a damn depressing post, but that's another story ;).

Writers who can get their characters to do that are awesome.
