Character name: Gekigami
Fandom: Okami
Timeline: Postgame, but before the sequel Okamiden
Age: More than centuries, but looks his human appearance looks around in his mid-twenties

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Gekigami is one of the Celestial Brush Gods, each of whom specialize in a certain technique of divine intervention which requires ink, a brush, and some godly power. Gekigami's basic technique is Thunderstorm. With it, he can redirect lightning from a source of electricity to wherever he can draw a line. While it certainly has its uses, it is rather... particular. Said source must have the electricity itself exposed in some way, whether it be lightning from the sky, open circuitry, or an outlet. The ability can also be inhibited by anything that would insulate it. He has an advanced skill known as Thunderbolt, which drops a bolt of lightning surrounded by electricity. However, it uses a considerable amount of ink, and the potential for collateral damage is less than desirable. It should be noted that he will sometimes use his powers subconsciously if he under a good amount of emotional strain. It's usually something mild like thunderclouds, but lightning strikes can happen when he's worse for wear. Since using the celestial brush and canvas interface are a gameplay mechanic, for simplicity he keeps a paintbrush on him, or uses his tail as a tiger.

Oh, and aside from divine brush powers, Gekigami has fighting ability. That giant blue longbow and lightning-shaped arrows are not for decoration. The set is his divine instrument, tools used by Brush gods to implement their power outside of painting. He is a competent archer not only in human form, but also his tiger form as well. The arrows are manifested through his own power and can be used as a source for his brush technique as well as regular projectiles. Like the fleeting presence of real lightning though, they vanish shortly after striking, and there's a limit to how many he can generate in a given amount of time.

While he is by no means invulnerable, as he's been weakened and sealed before, he's not a target for killing on a whim. He's an ancient god that controls thunder & lightning, takes the form of a ferocious tiger, is a good shot with a bow, and has the gall to attack his mother figure of a sun goddess. Not easy pickings for the average man.

How would they use their abilities?:
As per the unspoken rules of godhood, he wouldn't mind using his abilities to help or protect others, especially for family. It would take something pretty drastic to make him abuse his power for selfish or dark purposes, but he can't say it's impossible. His temper would probably tempt him, but he'll try to resist it. He should probably try a bit harder.

Appearance:
God form: 1
He represents the tiger in the Chinese zodiac and even then he's pretty large (Amaterasu's wolf form is a fifth of his size). Aside from the somewhat-normal white fur, he has jagged red marking for stripes, a tail tipped in black, and wing-like tufts on his shoulders and feet. The visibility of those depend on the viewer and their spiritual awareness/belief in gods. That does mean he may appear as a giant albino wildcat to the agnostics. He wields the oversized bow on his back and draws the bow with his tail, with the quiver strapped to his left hind leg. Also included are typical tiger fangs and claws.

Human form: 1 2
For when his tiger form is inconvenient, which is more often than not. He's on the tall side at 6'2'' and has an athletic build with fair skin and gold eyes. His hair's white and messy save for the portion at his nape that's very long and fades to black. A broad headband keeps the shorter sections out of the way, and it bears a design reminiscent of the red markings. Apparently the Brush Gods have difficulty in suppressing certain traits of their animal form, yet Gekigami is somewhat luckier with just the “tail” of hair, pronounced fangs and prominent sideburns as traces of such. The red markings are still there, albeit less of them, and the rules on their visibility still apply. His attire is simple and practical, usually consisting of a sleeveless black tunic, white hakama with red trim, black shoes, and white gauntlets with matching greaves. He still wears the quiver on his left thigh and carries the now-smaller bow with him. He wouldn't complain about wearing other things, so long as they're comfortable and he can move in them.

Background:
Note: this be involving a bit of speculation and headcanon, as with plenty of stuff in Okami. The game is more poetic than explicit in narration.
The tale of Okami Amaterasu begins in the village of Kamiki, threatened by an 8-headed beast named Orochi to offer a sacrifice every year. There's also this white wolf dubbed Shiranui that wanders the village, but she's becomes important a bit later. On the the year of the hundredth sacrifice, the young maiden Nami was chosen. The Great Warrior Nagi refused to let his beloved be devoured by the foul serpent. He disguised himself as Nami to enter Orochi's stronghold, and there a great battle began. However, Nagi was not alone in this fight. He would not have won without the aid of Shiranui, whose true identity was the powerful sun goddess Amaterasu. She waited for the day Nagi would rise and face the serpent according to prophecy. Together they defeated Orochi and sealed him away. However, this victory didn't come without tragedy. Nagi carried the fatally wounded Shiranui back to Kamiki village, where the two were hailed as heroes before the wolf's death. A statue was erected in her honor, which would be used a century later by the Wood Sprite Sakuya to revive Amaterasu, so that she may purify the land once more shrouded in evil.

Where do the thirteen Brush Gods come in? They each represent one of the original Amaterasu's powers with the Celestial Brush. They respect her greatly, and refer to her honorably as "our Merciful Mother/Origin of all that is good and mother to us all". One can assume Amaterasu found them in some way and took them in as her own children, who then treat themselves and eachother as a big family of adopted siblings. However, when that incarnation of the beloved goddess died, they were scattered across Nippon, and in the hundred years of her absence, her children took to becoming constellations, waiting to be released and bestow to their mother Amaterasu the powers she once had. Some were fortunate and found sanctuary from evil in areas of goodwill and high spirits. Others weren't so lucky, and ended up captured by demons. Gekigami would be one of the less fortunate. He was imprisoned by the fox demon Ninetails, ruler of the demons of Ryoshima Coast and flashy god-wannabe. In game the seal is represented as a magnificent, but imcomplete statue on Ninetail's fortress of Oni Island, kept like a sort of trophy. Despite his situation, he didn't lose faith in the belief that Amaterasu would defeat the Demon Lord to stop her from wreaking more havoc. Turns out she does indeed come, as Ninetails did quite a few things to anger the Sun Goddess and her very small friend Issun, a wandering artist that joins Ammy on her journey to learn brush techniques. She come across a certain giant statue of a tiger along the way, and recreates an arrow for it per Issun's suggestion. Said arrow actually pierces through the sky, parting the stormy clouds and revealing Gekigami's constellation. Some stars filled in and a few shots of lightning that Amaterasu nimbly dodged later, he formally greets her like everyone else.

Ah... Amaterasu. Origin of all that is good and mother to us all... The evil forces which dwell here had sealed me away... But your arrival awakened me and restored the light within. You who walk the same battlefield as I, Gekigami, god of thunder, deserve the power of lightning. Use it to crush our foes!

Amaterasu gets the power to manipulate lightning, make a mess of the mechanical palace, and zap that fox wench whenever she holds up her sword like the perfect lightning rod. It's also used to unlock the last region of the game, the northern country of Kamui. Metal observatories used by an ancient tribe of people supposedly also make for great lightning rods.

Personality:
Gekigami is a straightforward, honest person. He'll say what's on his mind, doesn't mince words, and likes it if others do the same. While he is well-intentioned and a decent guy, he is rather cynical and a tad high-strung. Pragmatic, apprehensive, and a tad irritable, ball of happiness he is not. Blame the fact he was contained by a scheming nine-tailed fox for nearly a century, which are known for their deceptions and illusions that can fool a sun goddess. He can be blunt and critical, but by no means is he unpleasable. As a god, he is very considerate toward other's positive spirit and ingenuity. In one of the sidequests where Amaterasu can perform grander acts of charity resulting in renewed faith towards one of the Brush Gods, he praises the efforts of the eccentric inventor Gen and the kindness of Amaterasu for aiding him. He's more reserved than most of his family, but his connection to humanity does make him empathetic. He also has unexpected moments of generosity to those he's familiar with, which may make up for plenty of other things he does hastily. On the flip side, he does secretly enjoy attention and being appreciated, and not just as a deity that relies on human faith for strength and existence.

Normally he tries to be composed and stoic, but as the tiger of the zodiac and possessing control over electricity, he has a volatile temper and a notorious mean streak. If you want to know how bad it can be, he shot lightning at Amaterasu upon their reunion, and shortly afterward they do the usual "Hey Mom, thanks for saving me, now you can have one of your brush powers back" routine like it's normal. However, it shows he's not downright unstoppable or unreasonable when he's mad, but it depends on how he's approached and who does so. God of onslaught he may be, he's only truly merciless if something offends him as a benevolent god or a loyal brother/son. He's aware of his nature, yet he does not have a straight opinion on it. It's not an easy thing to bring up to him. He does have is a strong sense of honor he will protect at whatever cost, but he puts high standards on himself because of it. Thus, he can get pretty down when he makes a mistake or does something he'd consider terrible. He's also the type to overwork himself and stress over little things.

Something that ironically makes him just as interesting as his colorful siblings is how his expression rarely, if ever, deviates far from a frown. Not that he is always so uptight, it just has a bit to do with fact that tigers can't really smile without looking like they want to bite a face off. Of course he still has emotions, but tone of voice and gestures do a better job to indicate how he's feeling at the moment. It's rather subtle, but he's a sincere and somewhat sensitive fellow.

Yes, he's not on the best of terms with most of his family. Having no qualms about hitting them with arrows can do that. But, he still cares and worries about them because he's the elder brother that wants them not to get involved with things they'll likely regret. When they're nothing short of inquisitive, it's hard to really hate them, and he sometimes can mention them in passing during conversation. The family's also not afraid to point out he can be just as much of an oddball when he's not wanting to shoot them. He has a slightly skewed idea of normal social conduct because of his imprisonment and family life paired with curiosity that fits him as a species of cat. It explains pretty well why he gets into things of the good, bad and awkward variety.

Have you read up on how the game works?:
Uh-huh. The Guide plugin is called the Flaming Ferret, and one can make money through missions, freelance jobs, or mooching off a buddy. There are other ways, but they aren't as legitimate.

1st person sample:
[The Guide's on for some reason, even though it's receiving no attention. One can see in view a tall young man with white hair and maybe-visible red markings standing in front of a recently reprogrammed elevator. If he knew how that sort of thing worked, he'd probably be giving that person/alien/entity behind the idea of talking entryways a piece of his mind, because this is not going well.]

What the... I'm very aware you are sentient and can have opinions. Still, I have no idea how something as... objective as that has to do with any of this.

It has plenty to do with this~ In order to reach my full potential, I much achieve maximum performance. Only people with a certain air can accomplish that, as their innate charisma draws more riders for me and my quota~ Crude people like you do not fit in that equation. In fact, at my peak efficiency where I attain a full capacity and move at a velocity of...

[Guide, here's your attention, because your owner wants the map. Pressing the buttons in a hurried way seems to hint at something building up, even though the dull, tired eyes don't.]

Please tell me there are stairs nearby. I don't care if I will have to walk hundreds of steps, just as long as each one doesn't have its own voice.

Hey, don't you ignore me you rude refugee! No matter what, the lot of you are all the same. We are created to bring an enjoyable experience for everybody, but you ungrateful mongrels just can't-

[CRASH! Out of nowhere, a small lightning bolt strikes down a few feet in front of the elevator. Okay, as much as he wanted something to quiet that rant, from the way he jumps back it wasn't fully expected. Neither is the elevator's reaction, unfortunately.]

BEEEEEEP. HIGH VOLTAGE WARNING. ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT-

[...He's just just going to spin on his heel and walk away. Just, walk away as far as he can to some wonderful stairs. The damage has been done though, and with the all of that ALERT-ing in the background, the guy's now got one nasty headache.]

For the love of Mother Amaterasu and all that was once beneath her, why me...

[The feed ends.]

3rd person sample:
Walks are good for everybody. They're peaceful, healthy, and keep temperamental tigers from losing it and frying something or someone they shouldn't. Despite the whole ordeal of you know, losing your home planet, weird missions, and unrecognizable food, Gekigami is settling in somewhat, after some... disagreements. Conflict is something he's pretty used to, and for the moment, he's not in one, so all is well.

He sits at a bench and sticks to watching the crowds of citizens bustling about. He can't help but be curious about the S.S. Thor, despite the circumstances. When you're a god, you could never really be this close to people. He never spent much time near civilization either (thanks, fox wench). As far as the passerby know, he's another refugee who might have odd tattoos if the possess any spirituality. Maybe he could change forms to a tiger and see what happens. The size would be a hassle, but it would definitely be an undoubtedly interesting sight.

"I can see how this kept Mother so amused back home..."

Admittedly, he's a bit miffed at the notion that for the price of not being noticed, he's not given the respect he honestly liked. However, it's not like he'd really want to prove his power through breaking something and have to deal with more paperwork or jail. People would probably think whatever machinery he messed with is only malfunctioning anyway. Not worth the effort.

He starts to space out a bit before something hits him in the head with a thunk and some laughing in the distance. He picks up the can and would toss it into a bin, but there's none in sight. Whether it's the thought of someone having the nerve to litter or to use the thunder god for target practice, this isn't good for that alien who thought it would impress his friends. Gekigami stands up and turns to the direction the soda can was thrown in. If the way that can is crushed in his hand doesn't give any bad signs, the low rumble of thunder in the background sure does. So much for keeping calm and not losing it today.

“Which one of you threw this? Say it now, or all you of suffer the same.”
