Drabble: Sift

Everything changes after that year, obviously. In most ways the aftermath of Henry's death is a giant sifter, shaking down everything in Richard's world until only the bits that are too big and unwieldy are left over. By then, it feels like the story of his life.

One unexpected loss is his love of mystery novels. Reading a mystery novel is trusting the author to deliver the murderer at the close of the book. In the end, order is restored and the guilty are punished. It's a simplistic world that he knows he will never be able to inhabit again.
