Standing Outside in the Headlamps

i can only imagine how i must look
great British navy coat,
tails in the stinging wind that makes
silver schools of frozen entropy-fish
swim through the yellow light of a pair of headlamps
on a car i can barely see.
freezing - or below:
i must be a ghost.
some roads are far too long for me to wander
down tonight.
the snow ceases being snow. it's liquid and independent,
it's just as deadly as me, sword on my belt.
the man in the car slows down.
i must be a ghost,
my heart is not here, i think
about you in your bed,
it's 11:53, past your self-imposed bedtime.
i must be a ghost.
i stand outside my door
and feel so far from home.
