the measure of love.
522 words drabble.

Apollo can still remember when he first laid eyes on the fallen hero, the once-legendary Phoenix Wright-a man who once shone so brightly in courtroom, now fallen into disgrace ever since that trial which had cost him his badge. Truth be told, he had no real idea why he had decided to follow the elder man’s footsteps and heed his words like that, why in that moment of truth in the courtroom during State VS Wright he had decided to trust him over the mentor who had taught him all that he knew about the law. Why all he needed was just one look at the man to feel the instinctive urge to reach out and help him even though it’s not fully in his character to do so.

It takes another three trials and the proper establishment of the Jurist System for Apollo to finally realize why, to understand that what he saw within Phoenix Wright was a light not dimmed or extinguished, but a light hidden by the darkness of himself. A man who had fallen so far that he believed that he would never be able to stand up again, or face the light again because he thought that darkness was the only side he could be in.

Realizing that made Apollo more resolved than ever to help the elder man, and in the months that followed help turned to worry and concern which then turned to like then love, and Apollo Justice has to wonder what he truly loves about the elder man as the months pass in this sudden, inexplicable relationship. As much as he tries to see and tell himself otherwise, there’s hardly a thing worth redeemable about him; he still plays poker, he still laughs at almost everything (even the inappropriate ones), he still makes no sense half the time and most of all he still infuriates Apollo to no end no matter how patient the younger lawyer tries to be with him.

But then during the quiet nights like these, when Phoenix is asleep beside him, Apollo remembers why he’s resolved to stay by this man’s side. It’s the memory of how his flawless mask just cracks as he holds the younger man tight against him, melding skin to skin and refusing to let go like a drowning man clinging onto his only hope of rescue. It’s when he recalls how Phoenix has stopped moaning in his sleep while he’s trapped in nightmares and an endless loop of memories that show his constant failures. It’s when he remembers that Phoenix Wright has always been Phoenix Wright no matter what, even if that goodness is now hidden under cynicism and sorrow and a broken, jaded view of the world.

Apollo Justice tells himself all these and more as he watches Phoenix Wright sleeping next to him, and once more makes the resolution to bring out the lost light from within the darkness of this man. He would make him see once more that in spite of everything that had happened and everything he had once lost, the former lawyer would never be alone anymore.
