[TST] fragments

Because I was bored and had nothing better to do. Theme taken from 1fandom, with focus on Hijikata - except through other characters who had a close relationship with him in the game. Some of them though are ambiguous, just because I can. 8D

fragments.
theskytides-verse drabblets
o1; crave
The first time he had made that strange request, Ichinotani had just guessed it was one of those ‘in the moment’ things. But as the days and weeks and months passed and the boy constantly asked for the same condiment, she knew by then that that wasn’t the case at all.

o2; none
It was strange, Edgeworth realized, how there was still people-two of them, especially-who would still stand by him no matter what, even back then when he had nothing to win and everything else to lose.

o3; glue
Chi could only wail and flail as she tried to untangle herself from the sticky situation she had gotten herself into when her owner was not around, and all said owner could do was to sigh as he picked up the damp cloth he had gotten and proceeded to free her from the mess.

o4; wet
It had started with the sniffling that echoed in the quiet infirmary, and then the quiet trembling, and finally when Roy did allow himself to turn just enough, all he could see was the vulnerable form of his twin brother doing his best not to look as if he was sobbing into his hands and knees.

o5; fame
Even though it was due to his position and politics that brought him to the Amestris, Date supposed he could try to start something here-starting from the one guy he could easily find himself rolling with.

o6; instant
In that instant where Hijikata froze at his (mostly teasing) question, Phoenix immediately knew something was very, very wrong.

o7; hold
A happy meow escaped her as the human picked her up, and she leaned forward just enough to gave him a lick on his nose (much to his eternal exasperation and some surprise).

o8; fish
“Got any threes?” asked Gintoki from over the cards he was holding in his hand.

“Go fish,” was the returning grunt from the officer sitting opposite of him.

o9; don’t
Toshizou paused when he felt a hand closing over his wrist, and he looked down to the sight of his baby cousin looking up right back at him with an expression that even made his own heart waver.

“…don’t go,” came the quiet plea from his eight-year-old relative.

The elder sighed quietly. “There’s nothing to be afraid of, you know.”

“B-But it’s the start of the Long Night-”

…ah, right, of course. He should have known.

o10; ego
Sogou scowled at the sight of the teenager passing by him, and blew a raspberry just because he could. Like always, of course, the idiot would just ignore and continue on as if nothing had happened, even though he knew that the other had seen him.

Hmph. Just because Kondo-san liked him better now, it didn’t mean he had to be so egoistic.

o11; flow
For all his rejections and denials and everything related to them, Roy did realize that someone, one way or another, Toshirou would always end up going with the flow.

o12; dream
Once upon a time, they made a promise never to leave each other. Now, Adachi knew that such promises could only be nothing else but foolish, stupid, childish dreams that would only break people all the more.

o13; action
It was nothing but action and reaction as their spar went on, and within it Date could feel that long-lost thrill of a good fight-something that he had never felt ever since that day so many years ago.

o14; enough
Flynn couldn’t help but wonder why Hijikata had to stop him from putting the durian into the pot-it would have made the dish so much tastier!

o15; green
The sight of the boy with his face so green was really quite amusing, and Yuuko didn’t mind the death glare that was sent in her direction as she chuckled at the sight before her.

o16; metaphor
If there was a metaphor that suited them, Roy supposed it would be the classic and cliché ‘fire and ice’.

o17; teach
So rare was it to find someone so willing and eager to learn-even if he was so young-but Ukitake found a certain joy in teaching the unexpected (and very quick-learning) student he had picked up.

o18; demand
Edgeworth found himself taken aback at the insistent demand that the boatswain was asking for, but moreso at the punch that had almost taken his jaw off when he had tried to explain himself.

o19; inspire
For all the fear he inspired in other people, Phoenix had to wonder at times just exactly how he had managed to befriend such a terrifying individual.

o20; unrequited
The pain of unrequited love was one of the worst kind of pain there could be-and it was something that both of them knew now, Roy realized with an ironic echo and a sarcastic twist in his grim smile.

o21; classic
Mitsuba noticed the way the teenager was looking at the book in her hands and smiled softly as she asked. “Have you read this before, Toshirou-san? It’s a bit of a classic.”

Hijikata was only silent as he glanced away and took a few moments before responding. “…not really.”

o22; far
Kondo knew that his dream was a far-fetched one-but so long he had Toshi and Sogou and everyone else with him, he believed that he could accomplish this hope of his.

o23; may
‘5/5’ was the date that was scratched within the cover of the pocketwatch in his hand, and Chi could only wonder what it meant as she stared at it from his shoulder.

o24; breadth
Sometimes, Gintoki thought with a sigh and a shake of his head as he rubbed on the spot where Hijikata’s fist had connected with his face earlier, that damned mayora really needs to open up his view more. Man, it had been just a joke too-Oogushi-kun really needed to loosen up sometime soon.

o25; wrench
Tohru yelped as he was suddenly wrenched away by the wrist, and could only try to keep up with Toshirou as the two fled from the enraged victim of their latest prank.

o26; hope
So many times he had almost given up during their investigation, but it was always Hijikata who had helped and encouraged him to push on. If it hadn’t been for him-Phoenix knew that the truth might have never been discovered.

o27; scent
As the familiar scent of tobacco and eggs floated near him, Lucied sprang up from his basket and quickly waited by the door, greeting his owner with a bark and a wag of his tail that wagged even more as rough but gentle hands scratched him at that nice spot behind his ears.

o28; pastel
As much as he was okay with mayonnaise (because it was light in color and not so obvious at first sight), the sight of so much on that plate was still more than enough for Edgeworth to feel like puking.

o29; artist
Ichinotani had to wince every single time when the boy piled all that mayonnaise onto her dishes-it was like how a vandal would splash paint all over and artist’s completed work.

o30; sorrow
There was a different light in his eyes, a pain and sadness that couldn’t seem to be comprehended in proper words. And when he saw that, Phoenix sometimes did wish he would know just what exactly that source was at times.

o31; path
They might have taken different paths in their lives, but in the end all their desires were the same: to protect and defend the ones that mattered to them most.

o32; wood
“Wooden ones, or live weapons?”

Hijikata looked up at the question, giving him a glance before making his decision. “Wood.”

“Hijikata-kun…”

“I just don’t want you to strain yourself when you’ve just recovered,” the boatswain went, and his tone brooked no further argument on the matter.

Ukitake sighed. “If you wish so, then.”

o33; acceptance
He knew, in his own way, that this was Toshirou’s way of trying to accept him-which was why he decided to lay off the remarks for once as he accepted his brother’s Lunasa gift.

o34; yet
Despite everything they had done, Edgeworth had still left them in the end, leaving nothing else but that note.

If he was this downcast, Phoenix could only wonder how Hijikata was feeling right now.

o35; shiver
He gulped as he stepped into the seemingly deserted house at the outskirts of Bellcius, and couldn’t help but shiver at the draft that passed by. In that moment though, he felt a rough hand clasp around his, and Tohru looked up to Toshirou’s attempt of putting on a brave face even though he was as terrified as he was.

“D-Don’t worry,” the younger boy started, voice already betraying how he really felt but still trying anyway. “I-If anything happens, I’ll protect you!”

o36; hero
On a dirty street in the Lower Quarters of Bellcius, Flynn Scifo could remember the night where he and Toshirou had made a promise to achieve their dreams of being heroes.

Today, he wondered if that dream could ever be achieved.

o37; body
It really was nothing short of amazing how he never seemed to gain weight, despite all the mayonnaise that he ate. Then again, considering how he never gained weight from all the sugar he took in, Gintoki supposed he had no reason to complain.

o38; man
In the end, Hijikata was but a man-and like every man, he would eventually stumble into his own needs one way or another. It was just a matter of time before he did.

o39; pretend
Sometimes he was so good at pretending, it was impossible to tell if he was lying or not-and that always made things horribly frustrating.

o40; curious
There was the saying of how curiosity killed the cat, but Chi certainly knew better than to do that-the last thing she needed was her owner starting to lecture her again.

o41; different
When he saw the other again, there was a far different light in his eyes as compared to back when he first met him-good or bad though, Katakura decided that he was going to have to be the judge of that himself.

o42; smooth
Unlike him, his brother was hardly the smoothest talker on the continent; but still, he supposed that Toshirou had different ways of expressing himself.

o43; right
He had to wonder at times how things would have been like instead if Hijikata had taken up his offer on that day, nine years ago-perhaps he would have been his right-hand man by now, just like how Koujirou was to him. But he knew it could only be nothing but a speculation, and that was that.

o44; damn
One of his favourite ways of swearing without having his ear talked off by someone.

o45; desire
Edgeworth could see the way Hijikata was moving in those minute ways, the irritated expression on his face and the way in where he was trying to stay calm-a sign that the boatswain needed a cigarette soon.

o46; ritual
It was almost like a ritual by now, how Angel had to do her best not to look disgusted at the way Toshirou ate his food. Really, he needed to have those tastebuds of his checked.

o47; color
They were almost the same on the outside, from their looks to the color of their eyes-and in the inside, they were also surprisingly alike as well.

o48; visit
Ikumatsu smiled quietly at the sight of the once young boy-now a man-hunched on his seat and staring her, and all she could do was to say the needed words. “Thank you for visiting me.”

o49; belong
At least now, both cat and dog knew where they belonged-right in that cabin that smelled of tobacco, where a gruff but kind-hearted owner always welcomed them back.

o50; bully
Why, Phoenix thought, as he scrambled around lost in Bellcius after being asked for something by a certain officer, why is it that I always have people walking all over me?

…at the very least, he supposed that Hijikata was a good friend in the end.
