So I'm back from Sydney. I had fun. I did manage to visit all three Universities on the 4th. (Which meant my day was abso-bloody-lutely insane.)
I visited UNSW (Uni of New South Wales) first, because there was a lecture I wanted to go to. All the people were lovely and very helpful. I spoke to two students doing law because, as good as my UAI was (98), it wasn't good enough to get me into Arts/Law at UNSW, which has a cut off of 99.15. They were both really helpful, both transfer students, and gave me heaps of info.
Then I visited UTS (Uni of Technology, Sydney). This has my dream course: Writing and Contemporary Cultures/ International Studies. I am deeply in love with their International Studies program. However, I want to get a job in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and thought I might need Law. I could do Law/ International Studies at UTS, but I really, really, really wanted to do the writing course.
Turns out I can. DEFAT doesn't necessarily want Law grads, just people who speak two languages, did a double degree and have a Distinction average. So, goodbye Law, hello Writing. I have the UAI for it too.
I also spoke to the Union people, and, ahem: DOWN WITH VOLUNTARY STUDENT UNIONISM. Howard really shot Australia in the foot with that one.
Finally I went to Sydney Uni. Now, apologies on the off chance anyone from Sydney Uni reads this, but the people there were unhelpful to the point of rudeness. The Arts Faculty stall was understaffed, and had no one who could answer any of my inquiries about Linguistics or Languages. And when I asked at the Law Faculty for information on Arts/Law they were friendly.
Until.
I said my UAI might not be high enough. Suddenly no one wanted to talk to me. They didn't ask what my UAI was (and 98 isn't low) they just... didn't want to talk to me. They made transfer sound like a bad option and just...
Well. It pissed me off, no end.
In other news, I could post my 8000 word English Extension Two story, if anyone is interested.
