I've been thinking about writing a "dear author" letter -- an open letter for what I mean when I ask an author for permission to podfic a story -- and finally got around to doing it. Inspired by
paraka's
post,
revolutionaryjo's
post, and
this amplificathon post.
Dear Author,
First off, thanks for writing an awesome story. If I’ve requested permission to podfic your story, it’s because I’ve fallen in love with it and am probably flailing all over the place about it right now.
Why I podfic: Listening to podfic is my preferred way to experience a story, because it means I'm being read to by another fan who really loves the story they're performing, and because it is generally easier for me to listen to a story than to read it on a page. I create podfic because I enjoy the performance aspect of it and getting to share something I love with other people. It also gives me a chance to spend a lot of quality time curled up inside a story that I love. You can find other podfic that I’ve done
here.
How I podfic: I'll always credit you as the author of the story and provide a link back to the story both within the podfic and in the audio file's meta data, and in any posting announcements I make. (If you don’t want me to do that, or have any concerns about this, please let me know.) I post my podfic within the fannish world (my Dreamwidth, LJ, AO3, etc.). I generally crosspost to a couple of different communities like
amplificathon; just let me know if you'd like to know where I'm thinking of posting an announcement. I generally host my podfic at
my Box account and at the
Audiofic Archive. If my hosting changes in the future, I'll update this post with the change.
It can sometimes take me a while after requesting permission before I actually have a chance to record, edit, and post a story, so thank you in advance for your patience. I love remixes and repods, so feel free to give permission to others to record this fic as well; there’s no need to let me know if someone does.
I also want to mention that it's fine if you do not want to give permission. You should also feel no obligation to listen to the podfic I record of your story if you do give permission to record, and there's no obligation to mention or reblog it anywhere. I give a thumbs up to
sophinisba's
post on this.
Let me know if you have any questions. I’m pretty flexible about all of the above.
♥,
Inkjunket
