Just popping in, I suppose ultimately trying to discipline myself in regards to posting. I'll probably be back regularly in a week or two, when classes are over, FOREVER. I still have to complete my thesis, and work out the second of two final projects (finished and presented the marketing plan on Tuesday - SO happy to have that out of the way!). I got an extension on the thesis, because originally, it was supposed to include three sample chapters, in addition to the press kit, the paper on D&D as a publishing industry, and the sample pages from the campaign guide for C's world.
Then, I realized that I hadn't introduced the third main character yet. For me, this was a problem. So I decided to write the fourth chapter, at the end of which he would be introduced.
Nope. Bugger decided he didn't want to come in until the end of the FIFTH chapter.
SO. Crappy first draft of the fifth chapter was written tonight (originally, the thesis was supposed to be due tomorrow, but as long as it's graded by my adviser by May 7th, it doesn't matter) and I'm going to sit on it for a couple days before attempt a REAL first draft, and sending it off to the adviser.
I'm really excited about completing the project, and really glad I still have momentum on the novel. That's always been my weakness: having an idea and a couple strong characters, but fizzling out halfway through because I don't know how to get them from point a to point b. Since I'm writing the campaign C ran for me, it's like I have an outline ready-made, though let me tell you, it's still a lot of work writing the story.
For example, two of the main characters (we'll call them DW and JS) went from one point on the continent to another point, halfway across the continent, in a single game session, because we didn't really need to roleplay much of the 2.5 month journey, whereas in writing the story, I can't really leave all of it out. Granted, I'm not going to write 2.5 months worth of staring at each other and making small talk, but I decided to have them stop at a major town along the way, where a festival is going on, mostly to contrast the everyday normal life of the inhabitants of the town with the crazy, seemingly impossible mission the two main characters are on, and none of that actually happened during the campaign. So, it's been an amazing learning experience, in terms of my craft, and I'm loving every moment of it.
In other news, GenCon sign ups were Sunday, and C and I managed to get every slot we wanted! Last year we signed up for I believe 4 lectures and 2 LFR mods, and we had a lot of time on our hands, which was ok, because it was the first year we attended. This year, we signed up for 4 LFR mods along with a Munchkin game and a Cthulhu game, neither of which I've ever played, though C has played Munchkin before, 5 lectures, and 2 workshops, one on mini painting for beginners, and one on creating a chainmail suit for a teddybear.
-_-
I cannot express how excited I am! I will probably be geeking out more as the date draws nearer, but for now I'll leave it at that.
Other than that, I'm really looking forward to D&D on Friday. Sadly, I am taking my main character out of the game, to introduce another - it was her time (actually, she's the daughter of DW in the novel I'm writing!) - and the best part is, no one has ANY idea, which is awesome because I can hardly ever surprise this group, although I suppose I've managed to do it once or twice :)
All and all, a good week. Hopefully the momentum is enough to carry me through till Friday!
ETA: Oh! And, I did the first wing of ICC10 and 25 over the weekend, successfully, so that was awesome, as well. Life is full of little bits of awesome. I think it's only a matter of looking hard enough.
