On the Upcoming Move

Feb 12, 2009 09:43

Ok, so I'm realizing I've not been a great communicator. And some of the folks reading this are going to be all "Sheesh, we know, enough about the damn move already," but others, I'm guessing, will be all "Wait, what, really?!" So, for the first bunch, I'd like to apologize for boring you. And for the second bunch, I'm really sorry I didn't tell you sooner. It certainly wasn't intentional.

Here's the deal: Dave is finishing his doctorate in May (Defending the third week of April) and has accepted a job offer with Intel. He'll be doing process development with the polishing group at Hillsboro. I will *not* be finishing my doctorate this spring, but as I am an historian, I don't need to be in Ithaca to work on the dissertation. So the short term plan is that I'll make the move, continue writing the dissertation in Portland, and fly back to Ithaca as needed.

The longer term plan, assuming Dave and Intel are a good match, will be for me to look for work in Portland, either in the academic world or in some sort of writing/communication/historian/management role outside of the academy. That's clearly vague, and if any of you have brilliant ideas about the work I should be doing after I finish my Ph.D. I'd love to hear them. It would be nice to get a professorship at Reed/L&C/PSU/OHSU, but I'd like the option of staying in Portland and employed if those folks aren't hiring, so I'm staying very open to the possibility of non-academic careers.

Here in Ithaca, we are selling the house: it will go on the market the last week of March, and we hope to close by the last week of May. Graduation is May 24th, and at some point in the week following we'll be hopping into our little blue car and riding off into the sunset. We hope to make a trip to Portland to do some apartment-hunting between May 9th and May 14th, but tickets aren't booked yet, so Portland folks: stay tuned.

We're sad to be leaving our friends here in Ithaca, but with a few exceptions (faculty, Heather & Brad) you'll all be leaving in the next few years already (may I recommend the Pacific Northwest? It's lovely.) And we're just thrilled to be headed back to Oregon. It's the state I was born in and still home to much of my family. It's the state where Dave and I met, married, and started planning our lives together. And it's a state where we left behind wonderful friends, many of whom are still there. It was so, so painful to leave. We feel so lucky, and so grateful, to get to come back.

Hope you are all well. Thanks for reading my long note.
Katie
