Today I received a copy of a book I had bought used on Amazon.com that was clearly marked as belonging to your library. I phoned the main reference desk and spoke to someone there, who took my information and had another woman call me back. The second woman said that, because you own an electronic copy, I am welcome to keep the book.
While I appreciate the generosity, I'm far more concerned that someone seems to be stealing books from the USC library and selling them on Amazon (and not even for much money-- I paid just over a dollar for this book). As I am not a USC community member, I cannot check to see if the seller is one of your students or not. However, I am including all of the information I have on the book and seller for your reference.
I am a frequent buyer of used books, a graduate student and a lover of libraries. Even when the books are old or inexpensive, I feel that it is important that we protect them from theft, especially theft for resale.
Here is the information I have:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/shops/index.html/104-7298951-6042333?ie=UTF8&sellerID=AOV8QW7A9I3L9This is the amazon storefront of the seller. His name is Ross Rowe.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/feedback.html/104-7298951-6042333?ie=UTF8&marketplaceSeller=1&seller=AOV8QW7A9I3L9This is the seller's feedback page on Amazon. As you can see, there is recent feedback (not from me) saying that he is selling USC library books.
The return address on the package is:
Infinite Rhythm
826 N. Hobart suite 3
Los Angeles, CA 90029
As you can see from this link, he's quite close to the USC campus.
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=826+N+Hobart+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90029&geocode=&daddr=University+of+Southern+California,+3601+Trousdale+Pkwy,+Los+Angeles,+Los+Angeles,+California,+United+States&f=d&hl=en&sll=34.085482,-118.305091&sspn=0.010165,0.019784&ie=UTF8&cd=2&z=13&om=1 There is a USC library bar code on the back of the book. The number is:
31275022868393
I hope this information is helpful. If you would like the book returned, please let me know.
Best regards,
Katie Proctor
Updated to add: I didn't put this in the USC letter, but here's the asshole's myspace page:
