An update, an update. I gave my talk yesterday on Alvan Clark & Sons, American telescope-making, and the role of discovery in the marketing of scientific instruments. It was really good-- I mean, the talk was fair, but I got great feedback from the department. The paper is written as a 'talk' rather than as a 'paper'-- that is to say, no footnotes, but if you're interested in what I'm up to I'd be happy to send you a copy.
I'm still swamped, but it is a huge relief to have that talk done, and done well. It was also a relief to have people see some sense in what I've been working on, rather than the response I was half-expecting: why the hell are you spending all your time reading about telescopes? I mean, I know, but I worried it wouldn't come across. Apparently it did.
